Moby Dick’s picks up first win in week two of basketball
2003-04 season resumes after two weeks off

After a two-week hiatus due to gym floor resurfacing and the wildfires that polluted the air throughout the city, the San Diego Hoops are back in action. In week two play Moby Dick’s came together as a team to pick up their first win, while Morgan Stanley and Fusion are still maintaining their perfect 2-0 records.
The first game of the night had Powerhouse Gym going up against Moby Dick’s. Powerhouse started out the game playing short-handed, but kept Moby Dick’s at bay with excellent defense. However with no subs in the game Powerhouse began to wear down’ and at the end of the first half Moby’s held a 32-16 lead.
Powerhouse came out in the second half, switching from a zone defense to man-to-man trying to make a come back.
“We played zone for the longest time but that wasn’t really working because they had so many people that were bigger than us and faster than us, so it really slowed us down,” said Powerhouse Gym coach Jackson Addington. “Then we went to man to man and it just wore us down even more, so we had a lot of heavy feet out there.”
Moby Dick’s kept players fresh, subbing in and out throughout the second half while wearing Powerhouse down even further. At the buzzer it was Moby Dicks 68 to Powerhouse 40.
After a first week loss, the win was a big turn around for Moby Dick’s — last year’s defending champions.
“Our first game we had a couple of injuries and a couple of people out of town, so we lost,” said Moby’s coach David Valenzuela. “Tonight, it was a very cohesive team. Everyone has a lot of input so they are helping me coach, which is great because being a player and coach you can’t see everything that everyone else is seeing.”
Powerhouse, on the other hand, is still trying to come together as a team and, with three players missing, it is difficult for the team to find its rhythm.
“Our trouble right now is just getting used to playing with each other,” Addington explained. “We are cursed with people who aren’t able to show up … the talent is there. I see the potential of our team, it just comes down to us getting into the rhythm of playing with each other.”
The leading scorers for Powerhouse were Chris McBride with 17 points and Jackson Addington with 12 points. Leading Moby Dick’s were newcomer Eric McDaniel with 25 points, Bryan Leigh with 19 points and Brett Drake with 14.
“Eric’s our new guy,” Valenzuela said about the rookie. “It’s his first year and at first he was a little apprehensive about the team but I told him we’ve just got to get used to each other and see what everyone can do. We know Brian, Eric and Brett are our three main scorers. The rest of us are pitching in with a few points a night.”
Game two was a match up between Hummingbird/Brians’ and Morgan Stanley. In a very physical game, things remained close through much of the first half, but Morgan Stanley made a run as halftime neared to take a 35-22 lead.
In the second half Hummingbird/Brians’ rallied behind the play of Dwight Dunn, trying to overcome the defense and speed of Morgan Stanley, but their full court press was too much for Hummingbird/Brians’. In the end it was Morgan Stanley 58 over Hummingbird/Brians’ 39. The leading scorer for Hummingbird/Brians’ was Dwight Dunn with 25 points, while Paul Demke had the most buckets for Morgan Stanley with 13.
Game three between Pecs and The Loft got off to a slow start, with both teams putting up shots that didn’t want to fall. After a low scoring start to the game, Pecs went into the half with a one-point lead over The Loft.
In the second half The Loft got their inside game going and, behind the scoring of Rick Kilgore and Dan Taylor, they were able to take a small lead. Not to be outdone, Allison Luckey and Greg Torrence of Pecs got their team back into the game, and as time expired Torrance put up a three-pointer to tie things up and send the game into overtime.
In overtime Pecs got into foul trouble and opened the door for The Loft, who went on to win the game, 43-37.
The leading scorers for Pecs were Greg Torrence with eight points and Allison Luckey with seven points. For The Loft it was Dan Taylor with 21 points and Rick Kilgore with eight points.
The last match up of the night was between Kickers and Fusion. Fusion got on the board quickly and took a commanding lead. Poor shooting was the downfall of the Kickers team, who trailed Fusion at the half by 19 points.
In the second half it was all Fusion again. The balanced play of the entire Fusion team was too much for Kickers, who tried to make a run behind the play of Robert Wiggins. In the end it was Fusion over Kickers, 59-22.
Basketball season continues this week with games at the Golden Hills Recreation Center starting at 6:00 p.m. and ending at 10:00 p.m.
