City will appeal award to firefighters in Pride Parade
Published Thursday, 26-Mar-2009 in issue 1109
The City Council voted 7-0 in a closed session Monday to appeal a jury’s decision to award $34,300 to four firefighters who sued the city for sexual harassment.
Councilmember Tony Young was absent from the vote, which was made public on Tuesday.
A Superior Court jury deliberated for two-and-a-half days last month, finding that parade participants and spectators sexually harassed the firefighters.
The $34,300 was to be shared among the firefighters: John Ghiotto, Jason Hewitt, Alex Kane and Chad Allison.
The firefighters testified in two civil trials that they were ordered to drive a fire truck in the 2007 San Diego LGBT Pride Parade with less than 24 hours notice after another crew dropped out. They said they saw simulated sex acts, men wearing underwear and were subjected to lewd comments.
