‘Fire’: The first Indian film to explicitly tackle the subject of lesbian relationships, Fire is being screened for free at The San Diego LGBT Community Center at 7 p.m. The film directed by Deepa Mehta portrays two women (Sita and Radha) who have been pressured into marriage by their families. The two turn to each other for solace and become lovers while their husbands neglect them but are tipped off by a servant and confrontation starts. After Fire’s 1998 release in India, right-wing Hindu groups staged several violent protests, setting off a flurry of public dialogue around issues such as homosexuality and freedom of speech. AIDS Life Cycle fund-raiser: A special fund-raiser for AIDS Life Cycle will take place at Redwing Bar and Grill at 6:30 p.m. The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence will hand out Jell-O shots and raffle tickets throughout the night, while local performers Regina and Lexi will perform at 8:30 p.m. The benefit will help sponsor Rona and Jodee in AIDS Lifecycle 8. ‘Rigoletto’: Considered by many to be a mid-to-late career masterpiece, Rigoletto is being performed at the San Diego Civic Theatre at 7 p.m. Lecherous Duke of Mantua seduces wives and daughters while his hunchbacked jester, Rigoletto, adds insult to injury by ridiculing their husbands and fathers. Finally, the joke goes too far and a furious father pronounces a curse on Rigoletto. The curse comes to life as the Duke seduces Rigoletto’s young, innocent daughter Gilda, then deepens when Rigoletto hires an assassin to kill the Duke. Find out if Gilda’s love for the Duke will finally bring the curse down upon them all. No late seating for all Opera performances. Late-comers will be seated at next intermission. The Opera is two hours and 42 minutes and includes two intermissions. Tickets are $35 to $200. The civic theatre is located at 1100 Third Ave. in Downtown. Bonnets and Baskets: The Imperial Court de San Diego and the Redwing Bar & Grill will host Bonnets and Baskets from 3 to 6 p.m. The event will benefit the seventh annual GLBT Community Children’s Easter Egg Hunt and will feature an Easter Bonnet Contest, along with a variety of other games raffles and prizes. With the current economy, the Imperial Court needs the community’s support now more than ever to bring the spirit of Easter to hundreds of children and families in need. There will also be plenty of food and drinks served by Redwing. The event will be emceed by Granny Pearl and is co-hosted by Joni Moore and Emperor Tone Puente. Kwaay Paay Hike: Wear a hat and boots on this 2.5-mile round-trip hike to Kwaay Paay peak (880 elevation gain/loss) with trained volunteers starting at the San Diego Museum of Natural History. Wear comfortable walking shoes and a hat. Hiking boots are recommended for desert and mountain hikes. Bring adequate water and food; even the short or easy hikes can demand liquid and energy resources. You may also wish to bring a jacket, binoculars, and field guides.
