San Diego Indie Music Fest celebrates diversity and rocks the community for its fifth year
Published Thursday, 26-Mar-2009 in issue 1109
San Diego Indie Music Fest is California’s first and only independent music festival. Debuting in 2004, San Diego Indie Music Fest made history as the only event of its kind on the entire West Coast. Growing exponentially in size, the festival has become California’s hottest and youngest event dedicated to celebrating and advocating indie music, art, business, culture and thought.
Celebrating its fifth year, the music extravaganza has grown into a 15-hour, day-long event with more than 85 acts representing multiple genres of music, including: rock, hip-hop, house, folk, world, country, funk, punk, jazz, electronica and Latin.
Indie Fest will also feature film, photography, dance, painting, poetry, spoken word and art performances.
San Diego Indie Music Fest is dedicated to supporting and celebrating the independent musician, initiating discussion and education of all that’s indie and fertilizing the San Diego Independent Music Scene.
The event will also host a special showing of For The Bible Tells Me So, the documentary that offers healing, clarity and understanding to anyone caught in the crosshairs of scripture and sexual identity. This year, the nonprofit festival will also extend special pay-what-you-can ticket rates for entry during the first hour of the festival.
The music, at what has become an annual event attended by thousands of San Diegans, is emphasized as a representation of why diversity is not simply to be “tolerated” but rather celebrated as the crux of what is remarkable in our community and is crucial to a healthy, vibrant city where people of all types are important, recognized and valued.
The San Diego Indie Music Fest will take place Saturday, March 28, from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. in North Park on University Avenue, between Kansas and 30th streets.Tickets are $23 for general admission, $20 for students, seniors and military with valid IDs. Children 8 and under are free. For more information, visit www.sandiegoindiemusicfest.com.
