Corvette Diner final day in Hillcrest April 26
Corvette Diner, the Cohn Restaurant Group’s first restaurant concept, has announced that, after 22 years in the Hillcrest community, it will be moving to San Diego’s Liberty Station. Corvette Diner’s final day of service at the Hillcrest location will be April 26, with the new Corvette Diner & Gamers’ Garage opening in early summer 2009.
Corvette Diner, San Diego’s original 1950s diner, was established by David and Lesley Cohn in 1987. Famous for its Rock n’ Roll vibe, burgers, shakes and sassy waitresses in bouffant hair-dos the diner quickly became a San Diego institution and a favorite of locals and visitors alike.
“We’re excited to announce that we are moving the Corvette Diner to Liberty Station, an easily accessible, historic community in central San Diego,” said David Cohn, president of the Cohn Restaurant Group. “The new location is twice the size of the original and promises to carry on the same tradition of fun and family dining, while adding new features, like an arcade, private event space, and plentiful parking.”
The Corvette Diner & Gamers’ Garage is housed in one of first permanent buildings on the Naval Training Center that served as an Officer’s Club and was established in 1923. The restaurant has seating for 242 guests and plenty of free parking at an adjacent lot. The new location will also boast a 5,000-square-foot arcade named the Gamers’ Garage, private dining rooms for birthday parties and events, three distinctively themed dining areas and a full bar for adults.
“The Cohn Restaurant Group extends a sincere thank you to San Diego for supporting the Corvette Diner over the last 22 years,” said Cohn. “We’d like to invite you to dine one last time at the original Hillcrest location and visit the new location when it opens this summer.”
Behind each Cohn restaurant’s eclectic, unique atmosphere and award-winning cuisine are two entrepreneurs whose vision has brought San Diego dining to a new level. David and Lesley Cohn opened their first restaurant, The Corvette Diner, in 1987. With the success of this ’50s-style diner, they set their sights on the fine dining market. Now, almost 25 years later, the Cohn’s have successfully established the Cohn Restaurant Group – a family of award-winning restaurants: The Prado, Corvette Diner, Kemo Sabe, Dakota Grill, Blue Point, Mister Tiki, Indigo Grill, Thee Bungalow, 333 Pacific, Gaslamp Strip Club, Island Prime & C Level and Pineapple Grill located in Kapalua, Maui. David and Lesley take pride that their company is family owned and operated and will keep the Cohn Restaurant Group tradition alive with the help of their daughter, Jessica and son Jeremy.
First openly gay partnered priest to give presentation about journey
Integrity, the advocacy group that works “for the full inclusion of all the baptized [GLBT people] in all the sacraments,” has invited Rev. Thomas Wilson to give a presentation on his spiritual journey on April 19 at St. Paul’s Cathedral.
On March 21, Bishop James Mathes of the Episcopal Diocese of San Diego ordained Wilson, who has served as a deacon at All Souls’ Episcopal Church, Point Loma for the past nine months. He will continue his ministry at All Souls’.
Rev. Wilson is not the first partnered gay person to serve in the San Diego Diocese, but he is recognized as the first openly gay person to be ordained in San Diego.
Rev. Wilson and his spouse, John Will, are longtime members of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. They were married in September. Will is also Episcopalian and an active member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Cathedral.
All Souls’ Episcopal Church is located at 1475 Catalina Blvd., in Point Loma. It has welcomed openly gay and partnered couples for many years. The church is also committed to its ministry overseas, especially to a hospital and teaching ministry in Kenya.

San Diego to celebrate first Harvey Milk Diversity Breakfast
The San Diego Harvey Milk Diversity Breakfast Coalition will host the premiere Harvey Milk Diversity Breakfast on Friday, May 22, from 7:30 to 9 a.m.
This historic event will take place on the birthday of Harvey Milk, and seeks to bring together all San Diegans who support equality and justice in celebration of his memory.
The keynote speaker will be Dr. Marjorie J. Hill, CEO of the oldest AIDS service and advocacy organization in the world. Dr. Hill has a long history of grass roots organizing and has received numerous awards and citations for outstanding community service locally and nationally. Sponsorships, tables and tickets are available at www.thecentersd.kintera.org/Milk.
San Diego has the distinction of being the city where Harvey Milk served in the U.S. Navy and the city whose Human Relations Committee, chaired by City Commissioner Nicole Murray-Ramirez, first formally recognized Harvey Milk Day.
When he was elected to the Board of Supervisors in San Francisco in 1977, Harvey Milk (1930-1978) became one of the first openly gay men to be elected to political office in the United States. On election night, Harvey Milk reminded his supporters: “This is not my victory – it’s yours. If a gay man can win, it proves that there is hope for all minorities who are willing to fight.” He was assassinated (along with Mayor George Moscone) on November 27, 1978, only 11 months after taking office. Although he did not live to see his dreams fulfilled, the example of his life and his leadership has made him an important national symbol for the struggle for human rights and freedom of expression.
Organizers hope that this event will not only honor the memory of this American hero but also strengthen coalitions between the many diverse social justice groups that work toward equality in San Diego.
The San Diego Harvey Milk Diversity Breakfast will take place on Friday, May 22, from 7:30 to 9 a.m., in the Pacific Ballroom at the Holiday Inn on the Bay, located at 1335 North Harbor Drive.
All proceeds from this event will benefit The San Diego LGBT Community Center. Tickets are available at www.thecentersd.kintera.org/Milk, or you can mail your check payable to The Center to: Terry Bishop, The Center, P.O. Box 3357, San Diego, CA 92163.
