Community mural project: Join The San Diego River Park Foundation in painting a mural along the San Diego River. No experience or artistic ability is required; a professional artist will lead. Those interested are encouraged to RSVP for a morning or afternoon shift or both: 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. The event is located at Mission Center Road and Hazard Center Drive in the parking lot below the Carl’s Jr. in Mission Valley and will continue to Sunday. 10 Simple Tips: Realtor Jim Bietzel and dynamic and sought after local Interior Designer Lynle Hawkins-Struble will host “10 Simple Tips: How color affects and stimulates your mind, body and spirit” at Ascent Real Estate at 11 a.m. Bietzel and Hawkins-Struble will discuss how different colors affect peoples’ body chemistry and moods. Attendees will learn how color can consciously be used to promote productivity or create relaxation. The event is free, but a donation of canned or dried food for the San Diego Food Bank is welcomed. There is limited parking in the building parking lot, so arrive early. There is free two-hour and metered street parking in the neighborhood as well. Carlsbad 5000: Run or walk 3.1 miles along the beach in the 24th Annual Carlsbad 5000 at 7 a.m. Participants will celebrate after the race with two free beers at the Pizza Port and Imperial Cerveza Beer Garden. At noon, athletes will vie for the prize purse and a new world record. Registration for the race is $50. Carlsbad 5000 will start at the intersection of Jefferson St. and Grand Ave. in Carlsbad. Zumba class: Zumba is an aerobic salsa that lets you dance your way to fitness. No more counting reps at the gym and counting the minutes until it’s over. With Zumba, you dance and exercise at the same time to great Latin music. ‘Romulus, My Father’: Attend a free screening of Richard Roxburgh’s Romulus, My Father at the San Diego Public Library at 6:30 p.m. Based on Raimond Gaita’s critically acclaimed memoir, Romulus, My Father tells the story of Romulus, his beautiful wife Christina and their struggle in the face of great adversity to bring up their son. It is, ultimately, a story of impossible love that celebrates the unbreakable bond between father and son. Arts Center of San Diego is cosponsoring the event. Gentlemen’s Martini Night: Gentlemen’s Martini Night will present its next event at Anthology in Little Italy from 6 to 9 p.m. Gentlemen’s Martini Night is a regular gathering for gay professionals and friends from around the world. The events attract the finest local men to new, different and upscale venues. GMN requires a dress code of dressy casual or business attire. No tank tops, cut-off sleeve shirts, T-shirts, jeans, shorts, open-toed shoes, tennis shoes or club wear is allowed. The GMN event at Anthology will include music by Anthology’s Jazz House Band, tray passed hors d’oeuvres and drink specials. There is a $5 cover. Beyond Gender Roles: Michael Kimmel and Terri Martin will facilitate Beyond Gender Roles: New Possibilities for LGBT Men and Women. The free workshop will take place at the San Diego LGBT Community Center at 7 p.m. Through a series of questions and interactive experiences with other GLBT women and men, you will have a unique opportunity to examine questions about your gender roles in a safe, playful and powerful way. This workshop can help you begin to redefine yourself in a way you may never have thought possible. Humor will be an important part of this interactive workshop.
