Well this weekend, I’m off to the West Coast Black/Brown Summit where I will be one of the keynote speakers and the attendance of Latino, black, Asian Pacific Islander activists and leaders is looking good.
Politics 101
The next City Council race could be very interesting. In District 2, I hear popular community activist Laurie Coskey has been approached about a possible run and is in the listening stage. With City Council President Ben Hueso going on to the State Assembly, word is that former City Attorney Mike Aguirre is the choice of many in District 8. Aguirre easily carried this council district in his last election. With Donna Frye running for County Supervisor Ron Roberts’ seat, it looks like former Assemblymember Howard Wayne has his eyes on Fry’s seat, but some would like to see Denise Price, who was Toni Atkins’ former chief of staff, to replace Frye.
Recently, a prominent Democratic Party fund-raiser told me that he broke bread with Assemblymember Lori Salañda and she told him she is seriously looking at running for County Supervisor. A religious leader told me at lunch that San Diego Unified School District Board President Shelia Jackson told him that Jackson is also seriously looking at Robert’s seat. Trust me, I’ve been around politics in this town for more than 40 years and these sources of mine are in the know. And, now, you are in the know of the possible candidates in the next round of political musical chairs.
Jerry and Lisa Sanders to emcee Milk Breakfast
Mayor Jerry Sanders and his daughter, Lisa Sanders, vice president of the GSDBA Foundation, will be the emcees of the First Annual Harvey Milk Diversity Breakfast. The event will be held on Friday, May 22, at the Embarcadero Holiday Inn. Tables are going fast for what is becoming one of the premiere civil-rights events for our community. This event is attracting support from Labor, Republicans, Democrats, Independents, business people, religious leaders and people of color leaders throughout San Diego County. Tables are only $350, and everyone is invited. For more information, call 619-692-2077, ext. 204.
Assemblymembers Block and Perez meet with GLBT leaders
State Assemblymember Marty Block held a private meeting with GLBT leaders at the Bamboo Lounge last week and Assemblymember John Perez (the first gay Latino elected to the State Assembly) came from Los Angeles to participate. Some GLBT leaders were not happy that Block did not take a stand or vote on the symbolic State Assembly resolution last month. As I’ve stated before, Marty Block has a solid record of supporting equality for all Californians since his school board days. Block also has one of the only openly gay chiefs of staff in the capital. While I agree with many state officials and leaders who felt there was no need for this resolution which had no impact whatsoever on any civil rights law, I also understand those who felt Marty should have taken a vote on this resolution. But as someone who knows Marty’s voting record for decades, I know he has earned our continued support. This old political war horse was very impressed with gay activist Fernando Lopez who held Block’s feet to the fire. Jeri Dilno also proved that we old war horses still have a lot to contribute in these discussions. Stampp Corbin was also impressive. After the private meeting, both Block and Perez went to address a GLBT public meeting.

‘Dear Harvey,’ written by Patricia Loughrey who is seen here in San Francisco, will make its world premiere performance at Diversionary Theatre on Sunday, April 19.
Remembering Cesar Chavez
I have been very blessed in my life to have met and known such civil-rights icons as Harvey Milk, Coretta Scott King and Cesar Chavez. I first met Chavez in the 1970s when I became involved in the grape boycott. I met Chavez numerous times after and urged him to attend and speak at the 1987 March on Washington, which he did. I remember Chavez walked the entire route and I had the honor of introducing him at the rally. One time, I presented him with an award on behalf of the GLBT community. Cesar Chavez was always the same man: humble, loving and a true Christian. Chavez was one of the first major civil rights leaders in America to support civil rights for “homosexual citizens.” I even joined in one of Chavez’s many fasts. One of my greatest honors was receiving a Cesar Chavez Social Justice Award from his widow, Helen Chavez. When you were around Chavez you just felt like you were in the presence of, not only a very humble, but a great man. Though I wanted to attend the Cesar Chavez Commemorative Breakfast and the Cesar Chavez Parade, my health did not permit me but Cesar was in my thoughts and prayers.
Bebe could be the next RuPaul
RuPaul probably is the most famous and well-known “drag queen” in the world. , I met RuPaul, a San Diego native, at Dillions when she was starting out and, of course, she was humble and nice. I had to deal with her when she entertained at one of the marches on Washington and the Stonewall 25 march in New York (I was on the national executive board and a co-chair). Let’s just say by then RuPaul’s attitude had changed. But you have to give RuPaul her dues as she is a superstar. While I thought her recent TV reality show, “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” was boring at times, I must admit, you could easily get addicted to it. You could easily become a fan of contestants like Bebe Zahara Benet and Nina Flowers.
Let me tell you about Bebe. She is the same in person as she is on “Drag Race”: nice, talented, beautiful and flawless. Bebe has everything it takes to truly become the next drag diva of the world. Bebe told me she would love to come to San Diego, and word is that San Diego Pride might bring her here. In a few weeks, when I’ll be in Denver, I’ll be meeting with Nina Flowers. Nina has a very popular weekly show in the mile-high city.
