Fraternity focuses on suicide prevention for national day of service
Published Thursday, 09-Apr-2009 in issue 1111
Delta Lambda Phi National Social Fraternity, the nation’s oldest and largest fraternity for gay, bisexual, and progressive men, is preparing to hold its first ever National Day of Service.
On Tuesday, April 14, all chapters and colonies of Delta Lambda will hold concurrent service projects built around the theme of GLBT youth suicide prevention. On that day, the brothers of Delta Lambda Phi will engage in programming to provide support for GLBT youth who are contemplating suicide and those family and friends touched by this National crisis.
Delta Lambda Phi will also be working with The Trevor Project, the nation’s only 24-hour GLBT youth suicide helpline, to promote its new “I’m Glad I Failed” campaign, reminding GLBT youth how much better their lives can become when given the help they need.
Youth who identified as GLBT were more than five times more likely to have attempted suicide in the past year than their peers who identified as heterosexual, as cited by the Massachusetts Department of Education in 2003. This represents a huge gap in the support structures for GLBT youth versus heterosexual youth. Delta Lambda Phi aims to help correct this issue by working with agencies nationwide that have the resources and training to help find a way to assist in correcting this trend.
