‘Zanna Don’t’: Ariel Performing Arts will perform Zanna Don’t at the Roosevelt Theatre at 7:30 p.m. In the world of Zanna, Don’t!, everything is reversed – the captain of the chess team is the coolest guy in school, the quarterback of the football team can’t seem to fit in and homosexuality is the prevailing norm. Things go awry when the school’s two closeted heterosexuals realize their feelings for each other. Heartsville High School’s magical matchmaker Zanna comes to their rescue to make the world safe for their love. ‘Shadow of Mercy’: The Malashock Dance production will be performing Shadow of Mercy at the Garfield Theatre at 9:30 p.m. Shadow of Mercy is a poetic and powerful dance theater performance that blends the dark and humorous lyrics of Leonard Cohen with the dramatic, provocative and deeply human choreography of John Malashock. Encore performances will take place on Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 5 p.m. Tickets for the Friday performance range from $18 - $28, with $14 tickets available for students. ‘Peter Grimes’: The San Diego Opera will perform Benjamin Britten’s Peter Grimes at the San Diego Civic Theatre, on its opening night, at 7 p.m. Peter Grimes is a shocking look at the herd mentality of an isolated fishing village and follows the story of the titular fisherman whose young apprentice dies while out at sea. With music inspired by the ocean, the orchestral music of Peter Grimes is so inventive and beautiful it is often performed by symphonies and the singing includes such wonderful arias as “Now the Great Bear” and “Embroidery in childhood.” Peter Grimes was last performed by San Diego Opera in 1985. Peter Grimes runs for approximately three hours and 15 minutes including two 20-minute intermissions. The opera will run through April 26. Earth Fair: Earth Fair will take place at Balboa Park from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Earth Fair at Balboa Park turns 20, while Earth Day turns 40. Earth Fair features more than 200 exhibitors, special theme areas, a food pavilion, a special kids’ activity area, three entertainment venues, art shows and more. Mr./Ms./Miss Gay San Diego: The annual Mr./Ms./Miss Gay San Diego pageant will take place at The Flame at 5:30 p.m. The Imperial Court de San Diego’s reigning Princess Royale, Lexi Styles, and Former Princess Royale, Regina Styles, will host the event. The pageant will consist of three different categories for “Mr.,” “Ms.” and “Miss.” The “Mr.” and “Ms.” contestants will participate in casual and evening wear. “Miss” contestants will participate in a talent competition and evening gown. This year’s pageant will benefit Project Star, a program of Family Health Centers of San Diego, which offers case-management, referral and supportive services for transgender persons at high risk for HIV and STDs.
