‘Dear Harvey’: The Diversionary Theatre presents Dear Harvey at 8 p.m. Written by Patricia Loughrey, with additional writing and musical composition by Thomas Hodges, Dear Harvey is a special reading series to celebrate the life of Harvey Milk, the late champion of GLBT rights. The play is based on interviews with Tom Ammiano, Toni Atkins, Jackie Grover, Cleve Jones, Christine Kehoe, Anne Kronenberg, John Laird, Stuart Milk, Nicole Murray-Ramirez, Daniel Nicoletta, Mary Stockton, Robin Tyler, Dottie Wine and others. Dear Harvey is the second project of Diversionary’s 2009 Queer Theatre Taking Center Stage that seeks to give voice to the stories of LGBT people. Tickets are $24 for general admission. ‘The Quiet’: As part of its Sapphic Cinema series, the Women’s Resource Center will screen The Quiet at The San Diego LGBT Community Center at 7:30 p.m. The Quiet is about a young, orphaned, deaf girl named Dot who is sent to live with her godparents and their daughter Nina. Her arrival sends the family into a tailspin, as dark, disturbing secrets, that have been buried for years, slowly become unearthed. Sapphic Cinema is a monthly film night by and about LBT women, sponsored by The Center’s Women’s Resource Center. Snacks and drinks are available for a donation. Community Yard Sale: The San Diego LGBT Community Center is hosting its first community-yard sale from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Donations will be accepted at The Center on Friday, April 24, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. The organization is asking everyone to clean their closets, kitchen cabinets, garage and attic and donate reusable items to be sold at the yard sale. The Center will accept donations of clothing, small household appliances, toys, games, bikes, bedding, dishes, small household accessories and furnishings, tools and yard equipment but are unable to accept large appliances or furniture. ‘Really Big Songs’: The Gay Men’s Chorus of San Diego will perform Really Big Songs at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, La Jolla at 8 p.m. The concert will feature audience favorites from opera and operetta to Broadway and beyond. The Chorus will perform songs including Puccini’s ‘Nessun Dorma’ to Elton John’s ‘Born to Boogie.’ The concert will showcase GMCSD’s versatility and trademark humor and will take place in the museum’s Sherwood Auditorium. Dykewomon: Elana Dykewomon will read from her new book Risk at The Center at 11 a.m. Dykewomon is an award-winning Jewish, lesbian author, activist and teacher living in Oakland. In Risk, Dykewomon explores America’s changing values, from the 1980s to the post-9/11 world, touching on issues of war, class, race, community and love. Coffee and bagels will be available. ArtWalk San Diego: Celebrating its 25th anniversary, ArtWalk San Diego will take place in Little Italy from noon to 6 p.m. This year’s festival, sponsored by Mission Federal Credit Union, will feature original fine art from more than 300 California, Arizona and Mexico-based artists including painting, sculpture, glasswork and photography. The festival was founded by a network of artists and art lovers to bring together all facets of the arts in San Diego and to promote the idea of owning original artwork. Covering more than 16 city blocks, ArtWalk San Diego will take place in Little Italy with India and Kettner Boulevard as its main thoroughfares. Taste of Italy: The Little Italy Association is hosting Taste of Italy in Little Italy from 5 to 9 p.m. Discover the palette of dining possibilities and enjoy samples offered by Little Italy’s restaurants. An Evening with Mariza: The Gentlement’s Martini Night will host An Evening with Mariza at The Balboa Theatre at 7:30 p.m. The famous-fado signer from Portugal, Mariza will perform selections from her body of work. In 2008, Mariza released the album, Terra, an album that mixes the music of fado with jazz, flamenco, Latin and African sounds and was nominated for best folk album at the Latin Grammys. Celtic Woman: Celtic Woman will perform at the San Diego State University’s Open Air Theatre at 7:30 p.m. Celtic Woman is an all-female vocal ensemble performing various traditional and contemporary Celtic-based songs and is often compared to such artists as Clannad, Enya and Loreena McKennitt.
