Ellen Stein, Ph.D. has had her private practice in San Diego since 1991. While there are many types of therapists in San Diego (MFTs LCSWs, psychiatrists and psychologists), Stein is a clinical and forensic psychologist. She offers individual and couples therapy for adolescents and adults specializing in problems associated with mood disorders, personality and relationship conflicts, and issues of sexuality. Stein also provides forensic services, providing psychological services for individual who are involved in criminal or civil litigation. This can include court ordered treatment, but more often includes testimony in trial, or evaluations that allow a client to be more effectively represented by their attorney.

Originally from New York (the Bronx) Stein was trained in Boston in forensic social work before moving to San Diego to study at the California School of Professional Psychology where she graduated in May of 1995. Outside of her private practice, Stein teaches Law and Ethics in Psychology to licensed professionals as well as graduate students at Alliant International University in Scripps Ranch.

Keeping a balance, in her personal time Stein loves to travel — especially if the destination involves learning about other cultures and their art and history. Stein is happily in a relationship with her partner of six years, Liz Morrison, a contributing freelance writer to the Gay and Lesbian Times.

Working with the community, Stein is very active with the San Diego Domestic Violence Council, as a past Chair of the Treatment/Intervention Committee and in her current role on the Domestic Violence Fatality Review Committee, which evaluates cases of domestic violence fatality for the county of San Diego.

Stein has also volunteered for The Center, offering a pro bono psychotherapy group for lesbians who were molested or sexually abused as children.
