Well, I had a great Mother’s Day brunch, out by the beach, with my two favorite sons, and they mentioned that this year marks another “Big 0.” Uh oh!
Boycott Manchester Hyatt, plus Barra Barra and Fiesta De Reyes restaurants!
Many GLBT activists have joined the boycott against, not only the Hyatt Manchester but, the Barra Barra and Fiesta De Reyes restaurants in Old Town. Councilmember Todd Gloria, Stephen Whitburn, Sara Beth Brooks, Bruce Abrams, Carolina Ramos, Carlos Marquez, San Diego Democratic Party Chair Jess Durfee, gay icon Cleve Jones and I have joined boycotters of the two restaurants. If you visit Old Town, there are more than a dozen restaurants to patronize besides the two anti-worker restaurants. Union buster Chuck Ross even fired the beloved tortilla ladies at the two restaurants. There are other places to enjoy in Old Town. I ate at La Piñata the other day, and for fabulous special gifts, check out two very popular shops in Old Town: Designs in Shell and Beacon Artworks Gallery. The ties between the GLBT and labor community are growing, and I know pro-union worker Harvey Milk would have joined these boycotts in a second!
Milk Breakfast sold out at 900 tickets
State Sen. Mark Leno has called the upcoming Harvey Milk Diversionary Breakfast of San Diego County the premiere event in the state for May 22, Milk’s birthday. This civil right’s event sold out at 900 tickets last week and now there is a waiting list. Milk’s openly gay nephew Stuart Milk called me this week and is flying in for the breakfast. Indeed, Leno is right. This San Diego breakfast is the talk of California’s GLBT movers and shakers. The breakfast’s host committee is one of the most diverse and dedicated I’ve had the honor to work with. Stand up San Diego and take a well-deserved bow. You have done Harvey proud!

Newly appointed City Commissioner Stampp Corbin with his partner Scott Bishop and City Councilmember Carl DeMaio at Corbin’s swearing at City Hall on Tuesday, May 12.
It’s now, City Commissioner Stampp Corbin
Greater San Diego Business Association Foundation president Stampp Corbin is San Diego’s newest City Commissioner. Corbin was sworn in at City Hall on Tuesday morning. I attended Corbin’s vote of approval at the City Council chambers along with his life partner Scott Bishop and Councilmembers Carl DeMaio and Todd Gloria. DeMaio and Gloria praised Corbin’s leadership and qualifications. Corbin is a past appointee of the Governor of Ohio and business adviser during the Clinton administration. He was President Obama’s GLBT Advisory Board National Co-Chair and a strong advocate for the Human Rights Campaign. We all celebrated Commissioner Corbin’s appointment at an afternoon lunch at Bertrand at Mister A’s.
Jonathan Goetz for City Council?
Former San Diego Mayor Maureen O’ Connor still holds the record as the youngest selected City Councilmember but Democratic activist Jonathan Goetz could become the second youngest. Goetz is looking at a run to succeed the ever-popular Donna Frye and is creating quite a buzz in political circles. While Democratic old-timers are trying to talk him out of running – they want Howard Wayne – younger voters and independents are encouraging him to become a candidate. Let’s not forget Jonathan Goetz was the number-one vote getter in his election to the Democratic Central Committee, with 9,866 votes. He was born and went to school in the district, and if he decides to run, could give Howard a run for his money.
