Marches and rallies planned for Day of Decision
When the California Supreme Court announces its decision on the challenge to Proposition 8, local marriage-equality supporters will meet at Sixth Avenue and Laurel Street in Balboa Park at 5 p.m. If Proposition 8 is upheld, attendees will march south down Sixth Avenue and then west on Broadway to the Hall of Justice, where a rally will be held. The San Diego Chapter of Marriage Equality USA, San Diego Alliance for Marriage Equality, and the San Diego Equality Campaign are organizing the event. For more information, visit www.dayofdecision.com.
If Proposition 8 is upheld, marriage-equality supporters will meet at the San Diego County Administration building from noon to 4 p.m. for another rally. The San Diego County Administration building is located at 1600 Pacific Highway in Downtown. For more information, e-mail sarabrooks@gmail.com.
The Saturday after the California Supreme Court renders its decision on Proposition 8, statewide activists and organizations will meet at Fresno City Hall at 1 p.m. Why Fresno? Buses and caravans will be offered but those with transportation are encouraged to carpool. Fresno City Hall is located at 2600 Fresno Street in Fresno, Calif. Pride announces 2009 Stonewall Service Award Recipient
San Diego LGBT Pride has named HP as this year’s Stonewall Service Award recipient, based on the company’s exemplary commitment to securing workplace diversity and non-discrimination policies.
The award is bestowed annually to a group or organization that may or may not identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender, but which has stalwartly supported the GLBT community over an extended period of time or has made an exceptional contribution in the past year.
Serving more than a billion customers worldwide, HP has created an exemplary workplace environment that puts diversity and non-discrimination policies at the top of its list. For four years in a row, HP has scored 100 percent on the Human Rights Campaign’s Corporate Equality Index, which ranks employers and their policies and practices pertinent to GLBT employees, consumers and investors.
HP was also among the first large companies to sponsor Pride celebrations throughout the country, including San Diego Pride. The company’s long-held commitment to diversity is reflected in the significant progress it has achieved over the years. In the 1990s, HP established domestic partnership programs and gay-lesbian employee networks and continues in its mission to ensure diversity and inclusion initiatives are woven into the fabric of the company.
For HP, diversity and inclusion are key drivers of creativity, innovation and invention. Creating a diverse, inclusive environment has been an ongoing journey of continuous action for the company for many years. Its diversity vision is one of global proportions that requires courageous, bold actions from many people throughout the world.
The award will be presented at a ceremony on July 13, at the Hilton Bayfront in Downtown San Diego. Each year, the community nominates individuals and groups for the prestigious Pride awards that are presented in four categories: individual community service, group or organization service to the community, Champion of Pride, and Friend of the Year.
