As a Latino, I am so proud of President Obama’s nomination of Judge Sonia Sotomayor. But as a gay man, I am angry over the California Supreme Court’s decision. I have much to talk about at my upcoming speeches in San Antonio, Texas, this weekend.
The civil rights movement of the 21st century
I say today, as I said during my welcome speech at the first annual Harvey Milk Diversity Breakfast of San Diego County, that our GLBT fight for equality continues to be the civil rights movement of the 21st century. Sometimes in our country’s history, the struggles of “minorities” to achieve full equality take time, and we are on that road. But I, we all know that our time has come. We are a civil rights movement, which has suffered a set back. But in the end, sooner than later, our community will prevail and we will taste victory. As history has shown, our GLBT fight for equality and justice will not be denied!
San Diego now has annual King, Chávez and Milk Breakfasts
For more than two decades, San Diegans have held civil rights breakfasts for Martin Luther King Jr. and César Chávez. Now Harvey Milk’s birthday has also become a day when San Diegans will annually come together, break bread and celebrate the life of another great American. Last Friday, almost 1,000 people came together from all walks of life for the premiere of the first annual Harvey Milk Diversity Breakfast of San Diego County. It was truly a prideful and unifying event that brought forth not only our sense of pride but family, laughter, tears and standing ovations for Harvey’s openly gay nephew Stuart Milk, keynote speaker State Assemblymember John Perez, 18-year-old student and Milk essay winner Megan Hogan and the first openly gay candidate to run for public office in 1961, 87-year-old WWII veteran and Milk Civil Rights Award recipient José Julio Sarria. One of the most powerful images was the current and former elected GLBT officials from throughout San Diego County on stage, including four state judges, three former mayors, a district attorney, five councilmembers and our fire chief Tracy Jarman. Religious clergy, Latino, Asian, African-American leaders, labor union leaders, straight elected officials, veterans, family members, business people, seniors, bar owners and youth were in the audience. Mayor Jerry Sanders and his beautiful daughter Lisa Sanders were outstanding emcees for the event, which lasted only a little over an hour.
And talking about diversity, just look who was sitting at my table: Barrio Station Executive Director Rachel Ortiz, realtor Jim Abbott, Congressmember Bob Filner District Director and Chula Vista City Council candidate Humberto Peraza, gay icon José Sarria, City Commissioner Bruce Abrams, State Assemblymember John Perez, Stuart Milk, philanthropist Rick Ford, Councilmember Kevin Faulconer, aide James Lawson, Caliph bar owner Sherman Mendoza, straights and gays. Once again, thank you to my Milk Breakfast co-chair City Commissioner Robert Gleason, the outstanding Breakfast committee, and the hard working San Diego LGBT Community Center staff, volunteers, sponsors and table captains. San Diego County, take a bow. We were the major and biggest Milk birthday celebration in the state!
Politics 101
City Councilmember Carl DeMaio’s Facebook personal-profile relationship-status changed this past Sunday from “single” to “in a relationship,” and word is it’s businessman Jonathan Hale. From the recent phone calls I’ve been getting, I predict that there will be a fifth GLBT march on Washington. Among those calling for one are gay icon Cleve Jones and organizer of all four marches Robin Tyler. Blog queen Perez Hilton was spotted at Universal Hillcrest and Dish this past Memorial Day weekend. GLBT leaders and businesspeople will be hosting a June 30 event for our next San Diego County Sheriff Bill Gore, and among the many hosts are District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis, Urban Mo’s owner Chris Shaw, Robert Gleason and Carl DeMaio. I’m glad to report that my friend Portland Mayor Sam Adams is looking like he is weathering his recent mini “scandal” as he continues being the dedicated hard working public official he always has been. And my “son” San Francisco Supervisor Bevan Dufty is still a frontrunner to become the first gay mayor of San Francisco. Close and concerned friends of local millionaire David Copley are telling me that his lover is becoming more “controlling” as time goes on. Almost every major gay activist and business person including me has endorsed the re-election of our City Council President Pro Tempore Kevin Faulconer. Recently, I had brunch with California State Assemblymember Mary Salas at Baja Betty’s. We should all be concerned that former City Councilmember Juan Vargas could be challenging her for state senate. City Commissioner Stampp Corbin is a mayoral appointee to San Diego’s Equal Opportunity Commission. District 4 Councilmember Tony Young has recently strongly spoken out on lifting the ban on “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” as well as establishing a state holiday in honor of Harvey Milk. Thank you, Councilmember Young. City Commissioner Corbin and I attended the funeral of Elizabeth Irene Hightower Smith, the beautiful wife of civil rights icon Rev. George Walker Smith, at the Christ United Presbyterian Church, and it was good to see it overflowing with friends.

Atkins, Kehoe, Gloria and Whitburn join Old Town boycott
The list of GLBT leaders joining the boycott of Barra Barra and Fiesta de Reyes restaurants in Old Town keeps growing, including Sen. Christine Kehoe, former City Councilmember Toni Atkins, City Councilmember Todd Gloria and former City Council candidate Stephen Whitburn. Look for an official GLBT boycott against the restaurants to be launched within weeks.
Fresno, Calif.
This past Memorial Day weekend, I and a sailor friend of mine joined 33 million Americans and hit the highway traveling to Fresno, Calif., which is 50 percent Latino. Thousands of people from all over California will be gathering there for Meet in the Middle, a huge rally against the recent marriage decision. I never knew La Quinta Hotels had such huge and beautiful suites. It was my honor to present awards to the founder of Fresno’s first gay organization and the owner of Fresno’s first gay bar as well as to its outstanding organization, Community Link. My bar recommendations: Red Tavern, North Tower Circle, Deja Vu and The Den. For more information on this great event, visit www.gayfresno.com.
