Temperatures are rising, your friends from out-of-town are making reservations to stay in your apartment, and you’re actually contemplating which “cleanse” will help you lose those pesky extra pounds, which can only mean one thing: Summer is here.
So how should you show off the body you’ve been working on the past few months with the super skimpy swimsuit you bought last weekend? You could always hit up Blacks Beach, where the boys like to roam. But then you’d have to deal with that insane hike up and down the cliff (I don’t care what anyone says, that cliff is scary). Plus, who wears a swimsuit at Black’s Beach anyway?
If you’re a bit more modest and would like to avoid getting sand in uncomfortable places, check out one of the following digs in the city for some amazing pool action.
Handlery Hotel and Resort
Starting Sunday, June 7, and every Sunday throughout the summer, lie poolside at the Handlery Hotel and Resort and listen to the vocal stylings of Lady Dottie & the Diamonds, a well-known band in the San Diego music scene and winner of 2007 San Diego Music Awards for “Best Blues” and “Best Blues Album.” The shows are fresh, raw and packed full of energy, so you’re sure to be entertained. Admission is $5.
Space in and around the pool is limited, so be sure to get there early if you don’t want to be left lurking for deck space. Drinks and food are available, and the staff is very accommodating.
If you can’t see Dottie & the Diamonds on Sundays, you can also see them almost every night of the week, like on Monday nights at U31 in North Park and Wednesday nights at Henry’s Pub in the Gaslamp. For a preview of their music, check out www.myspace.com/ladydottieandthediamonds.
The Handlery Hotel and Resort is located on 950 Hotel Circle North. For more information, call 619-298-0511 or visit www.handlery.com/sd.
Hard Rock Hotel
If you’re a loud and proud weekend warrior and experienced the shenanigans that is Rehab Sundays at the Hard Rock Hotel Las Vegas, then you’re probably ready to handle what Intervention Sundays at the Hard Rock Hotel San Diego has in store.
Every Sunday through September from 11 a.m. to sunset, Float at the Hard Rock hosts Intervention Sundays, “the ultimate daytime pool party,” featuring celebrity DJs, a rooftop outdoor pool, an ample-sized Woodstock deck with comfy day beds, and “scores and scores of eye-candy of every kind, tasty cocktails and playful, flirty fun.”
Cover varies depending on the weekend and scheduled entertainment. To avoid the inevitable lines, call 619-764-6926 to reserve a cabana and get some much welcomed VIP treatment. You can also book the IV Package for $149 a couple, which includes a Studio room any Sunday during the summer, two admission wristbands to Intervention and priority VIP guest access to the party deck. This might come in handy if you take into account the copious amounts of booze you’re going to drink and bad decisions you’re bound to make at this kind of party.

Lafayette Hotel & Suites
If you’re looking for a pool with a good mix of heteros and homos that’s a little more low-key, then the Lafayette Hotel & Suites is a perfect destination for a $5 fee.
The Olympic-size pool is definitely big enough to debut your synchronized-swimming routine, but the pool deck is not quite as large, so get there early on a weekend if you want to snag a lounge chair. Otherwise, do as you would at the beach and throw your towel down in what free space you can find.
While you’re here, sip on a cocktail and munch on some food from the “L” Bar & Grill. Pool service is a plenty, so you don’t need to move from your chair if you want to refill your afternoon libation. Plus, every time I have been to the Lafayette, the crowd is generally social, so you’ll probably make a new friend or run into some old ones.
The Lafayette Hotel & Suites is located on 2223 El Cajon Boulevard. For more details, call 619-296-2101 or visit www.lafayettehotelsd.com.
The Pearl Hotel
On Sundays, grab brunch between 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for $20 (includes an entrée and bottomless mimosas) and enjoy some pool action until 6 p.m. at the Pearl Hotel in Point Loma. The Groove 24/7.com DJs provide the musical ambiance and you can also keep yourself entertained with some sideline ping pong, board games, and free Wi-Fi.
Don’t forget about the Pearl’s Dive-In Theatre, a weekly series every Wednesday night starting at 8 p.m.. Movies of all genres are projected on a screen above the pool and admission is free. The pool is also open for free to hotel guests and others with a drink purchase. Next month, look forward to some great flicks like There’s Something About Mary on Wednesday, June 10, and Dazed and Confused on Tuesday, June 24.
There’s a host of other events at the Pearl, like Tacorita Tuesdays and games of bingo with $5 drink specials every other Thursday, so check out the Web site at www.thepeardsd.com or call 619-226-6100 for full event details.
The Pearl Hotel is located on 1410 Rosecrans St. in Point Loma.
