‘Dame Edna: My First Last Tour’
Published Thursday, 04-Jun-2009 in issue 1119
If you hanker for interactive theater, get down to Civic Theatre for one of the few remaining performances of the fabled, beglittered Dame Edna Everage. Dame Edna: My First Last Tour plays through a Sunday matinee.
Dame Edna, aka Barry Humphries, has spent the last half century gallivanting around the world in those rhinestone-studded ’50s glasses, entertaining her “possums” with her own inimitable brand of interactive stand-up and gossip session.
Created in 1955 as a parody of a Melbourne housewife, she’s morphed over the years into a flaming takeoff on showbiz celebrity, complete with a barely disguised disdain for cheap shoes and cheap seats.
This show offers never-before-seen footage of Edna early in her career, who in a fit of innocence signed a contract that bound her to do Bollywood musicals for two years while working with Mother Teresa.
But now she name-drops with the best of them, mentioning that she has hugged the Queen, skied with Osama bin Laden, even given an atlas to former president George W. Bush after she noticed a lack of bookshelves in the White House. (She notes that he called her later to complain, “I can’t find Overseas.”)
The Grand Dame has updated for the Internet age: “If you want to know why I’m still the rage,” she sings, “log on to Facebook and check out my page.”
But her stock-in-trade is audience interaction, voluntary or not. Anyone with seats in the first three or four rows who arrives late can count on a snarky remark like, “I came from Australia and I managed to get here on time.” And several of those closest to the Dame will be dragged up onstage to, well, to be the butt of Edna’s humor.
The shtick may be getting a little old and thin, and the shows shorter, but Dame Edna still thinks quickly on her glittery heel-clad feet and delivers what the audience wants.
Dame Edna: My First Last Tour plays through Sunday, June 7. Shows Thursday at 7:30 p.m.; Friday and Saturday at 2 and 8 p.m.; Saturday at 1 p.m. For tickets, call 619-570-1100 or Ticketmaster 800-745-3000.
