Stonewall Young Democrats to host Youth Forum in response to Prop. 8 ruling
In response to the California Supreme Court’s late May decision to uphold Proposition 8, the Stonewall Young Democrats will host a Youth Forum on Thursday, June 11, at 7 p.m. The event will be held at Bienestar, located at 3020 North Park Way, in North Park.
The purpose of the event is to provide young people with a forum to come together to express their hurt, concerns, and hopes regarding the actions that occurred leading up to the California Supreme Court’s ruling. Participants will also be given information and updates about the next battle for marriage equality, and an opportunity to debate what those next steps should be: a court battle? 2010? 2012? Something else?
Jacqueline Palmer, Equality California’s San Diego Regional Field Manager, and Allan Acevedo, Executive Member of the California Young Democrat’s Queer Caucus, will facilitate the discussion and provide information about the future marriage equality battle.
The forum is open to everyone, regardless of age or political affiliation.
The Stonewall Young Democrats provide a platform for young people (36 and under) to play an active role in Democratic politics. The group meets monthly and meetings are open to everyone. For more information, visit www.equalrightsnow.org.
Lambda Recovery Weekend joins Gay Men’s Spiritual Retreat organization
The Gay Men’s Spiritual Retreat (GMSR) organization recently announced that Lambda Recovery Weekend has joined its family of retreats.
GMSR is a nonprofit organization that supports spiritual growth within the GLBT community. There are three annual retreats in the GMSR family; the Gay Men’s Spiritual Retreat, Live and Let Live Roundup and now Lambda Recovery Weekend. All retreats are currently held in the nearby mountains near Julian. All are drug- and alcohol-free weekends with several self-exploration workshops. Each retreat meets a specific demand within the community, with the common thread being spiritual growth. Scholarships are available for all retreats to prevent exclusion because of financial means.
The Gay Men’s Spiritual Retreat, held annually at Camp Stevens outside Julian, Calif., was designed to foster and enhance camaraderie, trust, fellowship, intimacy and spirituality among men. Although attendees primarily are members of 12 Step recovery programs, and the retreat is held in a clean and sober environment, the retreat is open to all men. Together, retreat participants learn how to have fun with other men in a natural, beautiful and relaxing environment that provides a safe haven and escape from day-to-day life. Each attendee has the unique opportunity through the weekend’s activities to examine and improve his spirituality in his own way, while getting to know other men and building new friendships than can last a lifetime. Details are found at www.gmsr.org or visit our Facebook page.
Live & Let Live Round Up is for ALL women in ALL 12 Step programs at Camp Cedar Glen just outside the historic mining town of Julian, Calif. LLLR Offers a safe, supportive environment for women to share with each other. There are workshops, three speaker meetings, Attitude Adjustment 6:30 a.m. meetings, drum circle, Kundalini yoga/meditation, Karaoke, poker, board games, hiking. Women come from Oregon, Arizona and Southern California counties.
Lambda Recovery Weekend was founded on the principle of providing a recovery forum for men and women in our community to build relationships with each other in order to enhance our personal and collective recovery. Although the retreat is primarily set up for the GLBT community, everyone is welcome. The founding members thought that a retreat setting in the mountains of Julian would help with this unification process. Over the years the retreat moved to Camp Stevens and grew to more than 100 participants, who share their experience, strength, and hope with each other in a variety of workshops dealing with issues like sexuality, the 12-steps, spirituality, body image, dating and couples in recovery, as well as a number of games, entertainment, and recreational activities.
The GMSR organization continues to support the spiritual growth of men and women within the GLBT community, participates in many community events and supports unity with a focus on an individual’s spiritual growth. Contact GMSR at www.gmsr.org for questions and details on our family of retreats.
