America’s Gay Bachelor Finale to take place at W Hotel San Diego
San Diego’s own Mr. California in top five

On June 20, the America’s Gay Bachelor Finale will take place at the W Hotel San Diego. The contest selected applicants from across the country to represent each state, and on Saturday, a winner will be crowned America’s Gay Bachelor.
Still in the running are Mr. California, Alejandro Rubio, a Downtown San Diego resident, Mr. Arizona, Mr. Indiana, Mr. Massachusetts and Mr. Rhode Island.
“This year’s AGB (America’s Gay Bachelor) ticket sales are benefiting Marriage Equality USA,” Patrick Perrine, CEO of myPartner.com said. “Join us to celebrate the best of our nation’s eligible bachelors while supporting marriage equality for all!”
Celebrity guest judges include recording artist Ari Gold, Jesse Brune, of Bravo’s “Workout,” Abel Lima, the 2008 winner of America’s Gay Bachelor, and Jason Wimberly, Global Sales Director for RUFSKIN Denim. This is the second year the contest is taking place.
Perrine also said he hopes this finale event will be the beginning of a successful partnership between myPartner.com and Marriage Equality USA.
Fernando Lopez, Marriage Equality USA, San Diego chapter leader, agrees.
“They’re now basically a sponsor for Marriage Equality USA,” he said. “Hopefully moving forward we’ll be continuing to work together.”
“We are absolutely delighted to be the beneficiary of myPartner.com’s America’s Gay Bachelor of the year,” Marriage Equality USA Media Director Molly McKay said.
“We see it as an investment in our eligible bachelors’ futures to ensure that soon when they meet the man of their dreams, they can be legally married and live happily ever after no matter what state they live in!”
“It’s all about helping people find each other that actually want to have a committed relationship, as opposed to a hook-up site,” Lopez said.
“It’s kind of cool that they are a Web site that’s pushing for relationships too,” Rubio said, adding, “I think there are a number of guys like me who are relationship oriented.”
“We fight for marriage equality, and they’re trying to get people together that actually want to have a committed relationship. So it kind of makes sense,” Lopez said.
“This is the first time we’ve had an event like this, and I’m glad it’s going to be here in San Diego,” Lopez added.
The America’s Gay Bachelor Finale will take place from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. and will include a host bar and a live runway show featuring RUFSKIN Denim, along with other highlights.
Rubio said he is excited and a little nervous for the finale.
“I’m normally pretty extroverted and don’t mind public speaking, but this is going to be being scrutinized by a lot of guys, in what’s essentially a beauty pageant,” he said. “That’s a little bit weirder.”
“He’s actually a friend of mine,” Lopez said. “We’re going to be down there rooting for him.”
“I think it’s really cool that Mr. California happened to be from San Diego,” Lopez continued. “We had Ms. Carrie Prejean from San Diego be Ms. California, so now we’ve got our own Mr. California to counter that,” Lopez added.
Rubio’s online profile on myPartner.com states that he wants children.
“I’d like to have three or more, I came from a bigger family, and I like to have kids around,” Rubio said, adding that he wants a mix of genders and would consider adoption.
“It would be fun biologically to see what my genes would do, but adoption is always a great idea as long as you’re in a state that hasn’t banned it,” he added.
If you’re trying to date Mr. California, there are two qualities that can draw his attention.
“I like them to have a risk-taking personality, a good sense of humor, I think those go together,” Rubio said. “And then I like a little muscle on a guy. You have to be realistic right?”
Lopez said he and Rubio have been friends for years.
“He heard about the contest from me, through just chatting about it one night,” Lopez added. “He decided to enter, and it just turned out that he was one of the finalists. I had nothing to do with the voting process. People across the country voted and picked him.”
This is the first event myPartner.com and Marriage Equality USA will be working together on.
Rubio concluded that the experience has been fun.
“It’s been fun for my friends to tease me about it. My coworkers love it too.”
The W Hotel San Diego is located at 421 West B. St. in Downtown San Diego. Tickets for this year’s star-studded event are available now at www.myPartner.com/Pride.html.
