SDSU LGBT Chapter Mixer: Park Manor Suites’ Top of the Park hosts SDSU LGBT Chapter Mixer at 5 p.m. San Diego State University GLBT alumni and friends are invited to meet and socialize at Park Manor Suites’ weekly bar. Chapter leaders will be present to answer questions about membership in the SDSU Alumni Association and the LGBT Aztec Chapter. The mixer includes free appetizers. Jazz benefit: Balboa Theatre hosts the San Diego Regional MSDC Benefit Jazz concert featuring Hiroshima at 8:30 p.m. Since its inception in 1980, jazz group Hiroshima has assumed the artistic mission of bridging cultural divides through the power of music. Hiroshima’s sound borrows from numerous cultures including Asian, Latin American and African-American and has merged these influences into a unique and innovative whole that is solely its own. The result is a brand of music that speaks to nearly every aspect of contemporary culture. Proceeds from this benefit concert will go to support the future efforts of the San Diego Regional Minority Supplier Development Council to improve economic development in diverse communities. Documentary on freedom: Activist San Diego is screening a documentary on freedom at the Joyce Beers Community Center at 7 p.m. The documentary, The Trap: What Happened to Our Dream of Freedom, explores the concept and definition of freedom, tracing how the contemporary idea of market-driven and market-defined freedom came from. In The Trap, filmmaker Adam Curtis argues that current day mainstream views of the “free market” have led to our current state of economic crisis and declining civil liberties. Evening on the Nile: World Beat Center hosts Evening on the Nile, a Nile Sister fundraiser, at 6 p.m. Guest speakers include San Diego City Councilmember Tony Young and Nile Sisters founder Elizabeth Lou, a South Sudan refugee. The Prophet Vegetarian Restaurant will cater the event with African cuisine, and Senna Africa will provide live entertainment. Nile Sisters began the organization to help other refugee women, and their families, assimilate to the new language, culture, and set of systems that is inherent to the American way of life. Silver Crest Loop Hike: The San Diego Museum of Natural History Canyoneers will lead a hike at the Palomar Mountain State Park’s Silver Crest Loop at 8 a.m. The loop has excellent views of scenery, including wild orchids and ripening berry plants. The hike costs $2, plus a $6 parking fee at the park entrance. Allow two hours driving time to the park. The hike will take four hours. To get to Palomar Mountain State Park: take Hwy. 78 and exit county road S6 to Palomar Mountain, turn left at the junction with county road S7. Turn left after the park entrance and meet the Canyoneer host in the Silver Crest Picnic Area parking lot. Attendees should bring water, snacks and sunblock or a large hat to block the sun. Rock-Step: Rock-Step hosts a western dance class at The San Diego LGBT Community Center at 6:30 p.m. Rock-Step offers the LGBT community, as well as families and friends, an environment that allows everyone, regardless of skill level, to experience the pure joy of dancing. Beginners are encouraged to attend. No partner is necessary. Rock-Step is a community of dancers embracing the values of inclusiveness, respect, and good ol’ country kindness and hospitality.
