‘Rent’: The California Youth Conservatory Theater is performing Rent at the Lyceum Theatre at 7:30 p.m. Based loosely on the opera, La Bohemme, Rent chronicles a year in the lives of a handful of friends struggling with life, love, art, homelessness and AIDS in 1990’s New York. Jonathan Larson’s rock-opera includes such favorites as “Seasons of Love,” “One Song Glory,” “Light My Candle” and “No Day But Today.” Directed by Shaun Evans and Karole Foreman. The performance is the full, unedited version, featuring both amateur and professional performers. Rent contains strong language and mature content. Big Bay Boom: The Port of San Diego presents Big Bay Boom, a fireworks extravaganza, at the north-bay area of San Diego Bay at 9 p.m. The show lasts approximately 16 minutes. The best places to view the fireworks are Harbor Island, Shelter Island, the Embarcadero, Seaport Village and Coronado Landings. The celebration always brings a large crowd. Organizers advise to arrive at your designated location early. To beat traffic, the San Diego Trolley is an easy and cheap way to travel to the bay. Fashion Whore: The Ruby Room presents Fashion Whore at 8 p.m. Fashion Whore is a monthly fashion catwalk and dance party. Maystar will host, and DJ Groundfloor will spin. The event includes a fashion show by Sophistafunk Life Velsen Clothing Streetgarb. Because the night falls on our nation’s birthday, the event will feature $2 drinks ’til 11 p.m. This month’s theme is disco. The event costs $5. Heroes Against Hunger: Clair de Lune hosts Heroes Against Hunger, a concert, at 6 p.m. Heroes Against Hunger is a concert series sponsored by the San Diego Food Bank and features music groups Allison Lonsdale and the Eben Brooks Band. This concert is free, but donations of money and non-perishable food are encouraged. A portion of music merchandise sales will be donated to the nonprofit. Richard Avedon: The San Diego Museum of Art is exhibiting the work of photographer Richard Avedon from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The exhibit, “Richard Avedon: Portraits of Power,” focuses on Avedon’s photographs of 1960s and ’70s intelligentsia, politicians and powerbrokers, such as Malcolm X and Rev. Billy Graham and characters such as George Wallace of Alabama. Other photos document the Chicago Seven, the Saigon Mission Council, or George Lincoln Rockwell, along with some of his American Nazi Party followers circa 1963. Celebrity standards like gray-haired Charlie Chaplin grinning while holding his right and left forefingers at his temples to mimic a smiling devil and waif-like Bob Dylan standing on a rain-soaked Central Park sidewalk make their requisite appearance. Tickets are $10. Senior and student discounts are available. Richard Avedon: Portraits of Power is on display Tuesdays through Sundays to Sept. 6. ‘A Senseless Death’: The San Diego Public Library’s Central Library is screening A Senseless Death at 6:30 p.m. A Senseless Death is a new film by Raymonde Provencher and tells the story of “green card soldiers,” young, non-citizen soldiers and Marines, who were among the first casualties of the invasion of Iraq, and their struggle to achieve the “American Dream.” A discussion with local activist Fernando Suarez Del Solar will follow. ‘Jeffrey’: The Looking Glass Theatre will perform Jeffrey at the First Unitarian Universalist Church of San Diego at 8 p.m. Paul Rudnick’s romantic comedy Jeffrey tells the story of a young gay man in Manhattan named Jeffrey, who decides that pursuing celibacy is all the rage, that is until he is introduced to the man of his dreams, Steve, a hunky, charming, HIV-positive man. Will Jeffrey give love or sex a second chance or have his 5,000 sexual experiences eroded his desire for both? The play is directed by Geoffrey A Cox.
