Summer in the Park: The University Heights Community Development Corporation hosts its free summer concert series at Trolley Barn Park from 6 to 8 p.m. Bring the kids, dogs and the rest of the family for a picnic on the lawn and enjoy a variety of music. ‘Twist’: The Diversionary Theatre performs Twist at 8 p.m. Charles Dickens’ famous tale re-imagines Oliver as an attractive young man searching for love. By turns outrageous and provocative, Twist entertains with exquisite drag, arch wit, a bit of kink and a catchy set of new contemporary songs. Yet the show remains surprisingly true to Oliver Twist, a coming-of-age tale of loneliness, craving, adventure and, finally, redemption. Twist is an official event of San Diego Pride. San Diego Dyke March and Festival: The San Diego Dyke March and Festival (SDDMF) will begin at the fountain in Balboa Park at 11 a.m. SDDMF is a community-driven event that empowers, inspires, promotes and celebrates women’s and trans communities. The event begins with a rally at 11 a.m. Attendees will march to North Park at 11:30 a.m. Shuttles will be available for those who cannot walk the distance. The march will end at the festival site at 8Teen Art & Cultural Center, on the corner of Ohio St. and University Avenue. The festival will run ’til 6 p.m. There is no cost to attend. Politics Prejudice Pride: The San Diego Men’s Chorus will perform Politics Prejudice Pride at Irwin M. Jacobs Qualcomm Hall at 2 p.m. The show is a theater piece to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots. The event will feature an original script, and music selected from the popular music and social justice causes of the past 40 years. Featuring “Queer As Folk’s” Peter Paige and “American Idol” finalist/star of Rent on Broadway, Frenchie Davis, as well as regionally and nationally known celebrity actors and dancers from the San Diego Dance Theater and Malashock Dance. Documentary on national debt: Activist San Diego will screen a documentary on national debt at the 8Teen Art & Cultural Center at 7 p.m. I.O.U.S.A.: One Nation Under Stress, In Debt examines the rapidly growing national debt and its consequences. This film gives good background on the origins of the national debt and presents clear reasons why our problems may be bigger than many folk imagine when it comes to a return to more prosperous times. Museum of San Diego History: Visit the Museum of San Diego History at Balboa Park for free from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The museum features several current exhibitions: rare wartime aviation posters from the early 20th century; photos and narratives on the struggles, hopes and dreams of a group of teenage refugees from Somalia; and a century of artwork by San Diego artists, among others. The day’s free admission is part of the park’s weekly free Tuesdays, where a select number of Balboa Park museums are free to county residents. ‘Mamma Mia’: The San Diego Women’s Chorus (SDWC) will sing along to the movie Mama Mia at the Ultra Star Cinemas Hazard Center at 7:30 p.m. If you love musicals, if you love ABBA, if you love the freedom of singing in your seat in the safety of a dimly lit theatre, then this event is for you. The event will benefit SDWC’s Sister Singers Fund as well as San Diego Pride’s Youth Activity Fund. SDWC encourages attendees to help set the mood by dressing for a disco or wedding. Advanced tickets are available for $18 with discounts available for students, seniors and the disabled. Tickets are $20 at the door.
