Letters to the Editor

In fact, more and more agencies, just like Special Delivery and Mama’s Kitchen are no longer disease specific when it comes to those they serve. To reach as many people as possible, there are also food pantries and/or meal pick up locations for clients.
Dear Editor:
Once again, Nicole gets his facts wrong. Since he does it so often, I usually ignore his lack of professionalism and providing readers with accurate information. But, irresponsible reporting habits can hurt our vital agencies and those who rely on their services. It has been said that it isn’t over until the fat lady sings, but as a prominent member of the San Diego Gay & Lesbian community once pointed out, “When it comes to spreading misleading, inaccurate information and criticizing the individuals and organizations within our community, Nicole always seems to be standing in the wings warming up his vocal cords.”
Nicole recently stated “San Diego is the only city in America with more than one wheels on meals services for people with AIDS. WRONG.
Nicole has stated this falsehood in the past. Within thirty minutes and a few phone calls, I confirmed, with other agencies in other cities, that multiple meal services within the same city who provide meals to PWA’s do exist. In fact, more and more agencies, just like Special Delivery and Mama’s Kitchen are no longer disease specific when it comes to those they serve. To reach as many people as possible, there are also food pantries and/or meal pick up locations for clients. Isn’t that wonderful? Wouldn’t our community be better served if Nicole chose to share that positive news with his readers? Instead Nicole makes sure his readers know what cities he is flying off to and which special meetings he is or isn’t attending. It makes one wonder, why is his column entitled “Conversations With Nicole”? With all of his self indulgence and patting himself on the back, shouldn’t his column be called “Conversations ABOUT Nicole”?
A client who at different times had used the services of both Mama’s Kitchen and Special Delivery told me, “It’s great that clients have a choice. It says something about San Diego that so many people want to help us.” Mama’s Kitchen and Special Delivery have been around for 19 and 18 years respectively. This is no accident. They may do things a little differently, but what’s wrong with that? This also gives volunteers and donors a choice and San Diego is lucky to have both of them. It’s that simple!
In our present political and economic climate, Gay & Lesbian related service organizations need our continued support now more than ever. Both of these agencies and their volunteers deserve a standing ovation for their continued exceptional work. The fact that one individual can consistently be the source of such negative words and energy, is an insult to all of the dedicated and loving people who give from the heart and give tirelessly.
Maybe Nicole should pay a visit to these outstanding organizations and congratulate them and their volunteers? I like so many are extremely grateful for both Special Delivery and Mama’s Kitchen. Nicole, how about dropping the criticism and jumping on our appreciative bandwagon?
Sincerely,
Bobby Haas
