Gerard (Jerry) Colinard
March 7, 1954 – July 4, 2009
Jerry Colinard passed away July 4, 2009, after a long struggle with AIDS. He is survived by family in Australia and France, and by many friends in California, as well as throughout America, Australia and Europe.
Born in Tahiti and educated in Australia, France, New Caledonia and the U.S., Jerry graduated from Sydney University Dental School. Thereafter he briefly practiced in London before immigrating to the U.S. to attend USC, receiving his doctorate in 1979. He had dental practices in Los Angeles and San Diego.
Jerry supported the HIV community and was honored by San Diego agency Being Alive for his commitment. By 2001, however, he had rejected traditional Western drug-centered HIV medicine. He referred to himself as an “AIDS dissident” thereafter.
Jerry was passionate about: learning, travel, motorcycles, books, friends, food/cooking, the men in his life and the Bear Community. He held the title “San Diego Sun Bear” for 1999. A long-time resident of San Diego, he was the consummate volunteer, most recently with CCDC.
A memorial service will be held in San Diego on Sunday, Aug. 9. A memorial fund has been established with the National AIDS Memorial Grove in Golden Gate Park. For information about the memorial fund, call 415-863-3304.
For information about the memorial service on Sunday, Aug. 9, call John Himebaugh at 858-581-1508.
