Comic-Con movie shorts: The San Diego Museum of Art (SDMA) will screen Comic-Con animated and live-action movie shorts on the lawn adjacent to the museum in Balboa Park at 8 p.m. Special guests from Comic-Con will introduce film shorts including Once Upon a Tide, abridged; Iz – the Spirit of Aloha and Karma Café. Bring a blanket and snacks for the event. The event is part of SDMA’s annual outdoor movie event called Screen on the Green, from July 24 to Aug. 6. SDMA is located at 1450 El Prado in Balboa Park. Summer in the Park: The Trolley Barn Park hosts Summer in the Park at 6 p.m. Bring the kids, dogs and the rest of the family for a picnic on the lawn and enjoy the music of The Rhythm Jacks. No-Borders: The Centro Cultural de la Raza hosts No-Borders art-opening reception at 7 p.m. No-Borders features the work of artists from Mexico, Peru and the U.S. Artists from Mexico include Alvaro Blancarte, SPEL, Roberto Rosiquez, Luis Ituarte, Elba Rhoads, Luis Garzón, Libre and Chente. Peruvian artists include Aurelio de la Guerra and Victor Delfin. Artists from the U.S. including Armando de la Torre, Ricardo Islas, Guillermo Acevedo, Pablo Aztlan, Crol, Fernando Vossa, Rogelio Casas, David Smith will also be presenting their work. The exhibit runs for six weeks, during which, there will be a series of events that reflects the theme and players. The Centro Cultural de la Raza is located by 2004 Park Blvd. in Balboa Park. ‘Laurel Canyon’: The San Diego LGBT Community Center’s Women’s Resource Center will screen Laurel Canyon at 7 p.m. In Laurel Canyon, Sam, played by Christian Bale, and Alex’s, played by Kate Beckinsale, life and relationship are changed forever when they move in with Sam’s mother, played by Frances McDormand, a free-spirited music producer. Lisa Cholodenko, the same director of High Art, directed Laurel Canyon. Sapphic Cinema is a monthly film night by and about LBT women, sponsored by The Center’s Women’s Resource Center. Summer Shorts: New Vision Theatre Company will perform Summer Shorts, a collection of eight 10-minute unpublished plays, at the Sunshine Brooks Theatre at 7:30 p.m. This collaborative effort of local writers, directors and acting talent will ensure fun for all viewers as the production is comprised of different genres. General admission is $17. Seniors, students and military can purchase tickets at a discount price. Brain Buckit at Bird Park: Bain Bucket will perform at Bird Park at 5:30 p.m. Brain Buckit fuses the festive sounds of New Orleans Jazz with high energy rock ’n’ roll. Cabaret 2009: The First United Methodist Church hosts Cabaret 2009, a performance by the Hillcrest Wind Ensemble at 7 p.m. The Hillcrest Wind Ensemble will perform something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue – featuring classics, jazz, big band Broadway hits and music from your favorite cartoons. The event will take place inside First United Methodist Church’s Linder Hall. Admission is $20 in advance, $25 at the door and $10 for seniors.
