The San Diego Chorus Performs at the Balboa Theatre
The newly renovated Balboa Theatre in Downtown San Diego will host the San Diego Chorus when it performs its annual show; Music is the Key, on Saturday, Aug. 29, at 4 p.m. The show illustrates women’s life changing experiences found as they discover the rewards of musical passion. Follow a young woman with a love of music as she discovers the joy of singing and so much more. Her journey opens many doors – discovery of hidden talents, new friendships and a greater appreciation of American music. But best of all, she discovers the key to her own heart.
Headlining the show is the quartet, Affinity, 2008 regional Sweet Adeline champions. Affinity will compete for an international first place in Fall 2009 in Nashville, Tenn.
The San Diego Chorus is a women’s a cappella chorus singing four-part harmony (barbershop style) and dedicated to local entertainment and international competition. With a highly trained and talented membership of 80 women, the chorus has a 54-year history in San Diego and has been honored with more awards, medals and prizes than any local sports team. The San Diego Chorus performs for audiences with our full chorus, mini-chorus, double quartets or quartets, offering an exciting repertoire of songs, complete with costumes, stage makeup and choreography. The chorus is known for its musical excellence and high energy.

Pro-marriage equality organizations host kiss-in at the Manchester Grand Hyatt
The San Diego Alliance for Marriage Equality and Unite Here, Local 30 will host The Great Nationwide Kiss-In at the Manchester Grand Hyatt in Downtown on Saturday, Aug. 15, at 11 a.m. The kiss-in is part of a larger nation wide kiss-in organized by bloggers David Badash and David Maillouz. A string of kissing demonstrations were organized last July in response to the treatment of same-sex couples in Utah and Texas who tangled with security guards or police after kissing in public. The Great Nationwide Kiss-In is an attempt by Badash and Maillouz to bring the kiss-ins to more national level.
“We need to make a strong statement to everyone everywhere: kissing is not a bad thing, nor has it ever been. It’s not vulgar or inappropriate. It’s a sign of affection that is as old as time itself. And it’s a beautiful thing that we share with our loved ones every single day,” Badash and Maillouz said on their Facebook page, adding that, “The more cities with corresponding events, and the more people who participate in those events, the stronger the statement.”
The Manchester Grand Hyatt is located at 1 Market Place in Downtown. For more information about the local kiss-in, visit www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=118528143600&ref=share or e-mail sydstevens@sitin4equality.net.
