All right, listen up! I am not moving to Arizona… period! I have never been on Craigslist, and I don’t even own a computer. I do write my postings on my blog and do receive all my e-mails. I do not have a staff, but I have a lot of friends who help me. And, yes, I live in a senior living apartment in Hillcrest… enough said.
The National Equality March, Washington, D.C., Oct. 11… my priority.
For the next 60 days my No. 1 priority will be the upcoming National Equality March, which is set for Sunday, Oct. 11, in Washington, D.C. I am on the National Steering Committee for the march and I’m working with Cleve Jones to do whatever I can do to fulfill the community’s fifth march on Washington.

Happy birthday to Toni Atkins on Aug. 1!
I had the honor to also work on the national organizing levels for the 1979, 1987, 1993 and 2000 marches on Washington and will do all I can to make this one a success. Among the other national steering committee members are David Mixner, Oscar Award-winning writer Justin Black, and many GLBT leaders and activists from across the nation, including straight supporters and allies. The next few months will find me in Chicago, Austin, Washington, D.C., Denver, Iowa, and elsewhere. Many San Diegans have already made plans to be in our nation’s capital on Oct. 11. I’m also working on a special congressional reception for visiting San Diegans. Check out the ads for the march currently running television on Logo!
Politics 101
Ron Roberts gave me a call recently to say he is seeking re-election to the County Board of Supervisors representing District 4. I also received a call from Lori Saldaña who will be seeking the same supervisory seat… This is certainly going to be the race to watch!

Brian… Another reason to stop by the Ruby Room and the new Ruby Kitchen!
MCC San Diego will soon have a new home, a church located near Interstate 5 and Clairemont Drive, according to Pastor Dan. Let’s keep them in our prayers. Community leaders and business people are meeting tonight at the beautiful home of Mike Magee and Ed Chang to plan a fundraiser for popular Councilmember Kevin Faulconer. Ben Hueso has been a friend and strong believer in equality for all people on the City Council and so will his brother Felipe. Assemblymember John Perez (Milk Diversity Breakfast keynote speaker) may be running for the State Senate soon. I had a nice conversation with San Francisco Supervisor Bevan Dufty and he told me he is ready to become mayor of the city by the bay. Dufty for mayor!
I was at City Hall recently and attended a hearing on the proposed new Downtown library. It was interesting to see and hear mostly wealthy individuals supporting the proposed building. I say no to a new library and let’s build up our branch libraries! I have signed a letter along with other GLBT activists in California supporting marriage equality on the 2012 ballot. Lesbian political legend Jean Harris gave me a call. Jean is now on the staff of past Senate President John Burton, who is now Chair of the California Democratic Party. All I have to say is hooray! That idiot Art Torres is finally gone. Steve Dannon for County Supervisor… Go Steve!
Michela Alioto-Pier for State Insurance Commissioner!

San Diego’s new Airport Authority Board appointee, Robert Gleason, with District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis and Mrs. Anne Evans
When you meet Michela you know that she could be a future governor, smart and beautiful. She is a highly respected disability-rights advocate, among many things. At the age of only 17, she received a presidential appointment to the National Council on Disabilities Advisory Board. She worked for former Vice President Gore and is an outstanding public servant. Remember that name: Michela Alioto-Pier! While I don’t always agree with Jess Durfee’s political endorsements, he has indeed been, and continues to be, one of the very best San Diego County Democratic Club chairs ever. The Republican Party is not only losing major support nationally but statewide and locally. In San Diego, any real future of the Republican Party lies in the hands of Bonnie Dumanis, Carl DeMaio, Nathan Fletcher, Ron Roberts and Kevin Faulconer.
The Center’s Youth Housing Project must change
I believe with all my heart that The San Diego LGBT Community Center, its board, staff and donors, and our community had the very best intentions in opening The Center’s Sunburst Youth Housing Project, but if there are not some major changes made, I believe there will be more drug-related deaths at this Downtown complex. First of all, I believe that the name should be changed, as most of the residents are in their 20s, and no one under 18 can live there. The Los Angeles Center’s program has the word “Transitional” in its name, and all clients must have a job or be enrolled in college and can only stay 18 months. In San Diego, some clients have been there for two to three years. The San Diego complex should have a visitors’ curfew (10 p.m.) and check-in. I firmly believe that clients should have mandatory drug testing. I am sad to say that, in some ways, the San Diego complex has almost become a drug house or hangout. Some of the clients, sadly, are even working Balboa Park. While I know that the housing complex has had some major success stories and helped some of our young GLBT adults, it has now become an environment that is not working for the betterment of all its clients.
I have never hidden that I come from a street/drug life. I strongly support the recovery community, because I know we live from day-to-day, and I pray to God for, not only his help for me, but for those in recovery from 24 hours to more than 20 years. It is step-by-step and sometimes you fall, but you just pick yourself up. I have been chair of The Center’s Housing Advisory Committee along with Carolina Ramos (and have been responsible for $100,000 in contributions). I have talked to Center board members and staff about this issue and my concerns. I urge board members to seriously look into these problems and make changes now before it’s, once again, too late. Thank you.
