Flaming Gaytor competition draws statewide participation
The third annual Flaming Gaytor swim meet will be held at the Tierrasanta Recreation Center on Saturday, Sept. 12, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. San Diego’s Different Strokes Swim Team (DSST) will host this unofficial meet and welcome spectators and an estimated 75 swimmers from San Diego, the Long Beach Grunions and San Francisco Tsunami. In addition to many of the usual swim meet events, the Flaming Gaytor features several unique relays, such as driving a toy car on the bottom of the pool, and kicking across the pool and back on top of a squeaky inflatable gator. The grand finale is a ‘drag’ race that requires swimmers to wear a drag outfit, swim 50 yards and then transfer the outfit to the next swimmer on the relay team. The swimming events will be followed by a social at Bourbon Street (6-9 p.m.) including team awards and cocktails. For more information and registration details, contact Johanna Schroeder at 858-735-1915 or visit www.dsst.org.

Senior Resource Fair scheduled for Aug. 22
The San Diego LGBT Community Center is pleased to announce that the Fourth Annual Senior Resource Fair will take place on Saturday, August 22, 2009, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., at The Center (3909 Centre St., Hillcrest). The Senior Resource Fair is a day of no-cost services, resources and workshops focused on senior health and well-being. The theme for this year’s fair is “Life Is a Banquet (On a Budget!),” and organizers aim to provide attendees with resources for staying healthy and active, despite the current economic climate.
“We want seniors to know that even though times are tough, they are not alone,” says Abby Schwartz, Senior Services Coordinator at The Center. “It is our hope to provide our seniors with a free day of workshops, resources and community support that will leave everyone inspired, relaxed and a little clearer on how to navigate the ups and downs of today’s economy.”
The planning committee is currently accepting applications from local businesses and community organizations interested in renting booth space at the event; booth rental fees are $30 (nonprofit) and $75 (business/private). The extended deadline for vendor/booth applications is Aug. 1. For more information on the Senior Resource Fair or to request a booth application, please contact Abby Schwartz, at 619-692-2077, ext. 212 or e-mail aschwartz@thecentersd.org.

Townspeople celebrates 25 years of service
Townspeople will celebrate its 25th Anniversary and honor community partners at Bringing Hope Home, Friday, Sept. 25, at Prado Restaurant in Balboa Park.
Both of the organization’s projects in San Diego are examples of the Supportive Housing model, in which residents with special needs or disabilities live independently, following all of the provisions of a lease, and receive supportive services from local service providers, which help them maintain housing on a permanent basis. Townspeople has strong working relationships with HIV/AIDS service providers and case management agencies throughout the county and utilizes Memorandums of Understanding and Letters of Collaboration with several service providers to ensure that services are effectively leveraged in order to make each project a success.
Bringing Hope Home begins with cocktails at 6 p.m. followed by dinner and presentations from 7 to 10 p.m. Tickets are $100 per person or $175 for two. Reservations are required. For more information, call 619-295-8802 or visit www.townspeople.org.
FHCSD trailblazers in lesbian health care
Continuing the tradition of providing affordable culturally appropriate services to San Diego’s GLBT community, Family Health Centers of San Diego (FHCSD) is proud to introduce the Amazon Breast Project, targeting lesbians in San Diego. With funds provided by the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation, the project provides information on breast cancer risk factors and detection, encouraging women to participate in the project’s monthly breast cancer screening events. Lesbian and bisexual women have been identified as a group at increased risk of breast cancer. This greater risk may be linked to never having children, as well as barriers to screening, such as not seeing a doctor on a regular basis. As a result, breast cancer may not be detected in the early stages when greater treatment options may be available. FHCSD will have its first month breast cancer screening event on Saturday, Aug. 22, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the North Park Family Health Centers at 3544 30th St., San Diego in North Park. Mammograms will be available on-site. Family Health Centers of San Diego invites the Lesbian community to participate in this important service. For more information, call 619-515-2449.
