‘The 39 Steps’: The La Jolla Playhouse is performing Alfred Hitchcock’s 39 Steps at The Mandell Weiss Forum Theatre at 8 p.m. Mix a Hitchcock masterpiece with a juicy spy novel, add a dash of Monty Python and you have the intriguing, thrilling, riotous, comedy smash straight from Broadway, The 39 Steps. The show contains every single legendary scene from the award-winning movie, including the chase on the Flying Scotsman, the escape on the Forth Bridge and the first theatrical bi-plane crash ever staged and the sensational death-defying finale in the London Palladium. The 39 Steps will be performed again on Saturday, Sept. 12 at 2 and 8 p.m. and Sunday, Sept. 13 at 2 and 7 p.m. Tickets start at $30. People will gather at the corner of University Avenue and Sixth Avenue in Hillcrest. Organizers encourage those attending to bring signs and banners with messages of peace to hold up in honor of the tragedy. Activist Book Club: The Center is hosting Activist Book Club at 6 p.m. The group will read and discuss Sherry Wolf’s Sexuality and Socialism: History, Politics and Theory of LGBT Liberation. For more information, call 619-692-2077, ext. 212 or e-mail seniors@thecentersd.org. ‘Archeology of Memory’: Movies that Matter will screen Archeology of Memory: The Villa Grimaldi at the Centro Cultral de la Raza at 7 p.m. The film is a documentary about Bay Area multimedia artist Quique Cruz working to come to terms with his arrest, disappearance and incarceration in Chile’s notorious torture center, the Villa Grimaldi, under Pinochet, as he struggles to complete a multimedia work composition commissioned to commemorate Pinochet’s victims 35 years later. After the screening, Survivors of Torture International, Amnesty International and the ACLU will discuss human rights and civil rights post 9/11. Admission is $7. Flaming Gaytors: Different Strokes Swim Team (DSST) hosts its third annual Flaming Gaytors Swim Meet at the Tierrasanta Municipal Pool at 9 a.m. An estimated 75 swimmers from San Diego, the Long Beach Grunions and San Francisco Tsunami will be in attendance. The event will feature several unique relays, such as driving a toy car on the bottom of the pool and kicking across the pool and back on top of a squeaky inflatable gator. The grand finale is a “drag” race that requires swimmers to wear a drag outfit, swim fifty yards and then transfer the outfit to the next swimmer on their relay team. ‘War on Terror’: Your Network is screening War on Terror: Expenditures, Foreign Policy and Pathways to Peace at Joyce Beers Community Center at 6:30 p.m. The film discusses the psychological impact of the “War on Terror” on American people, the human and financial costs of the war, Obama’s expansion of the war, what corporations are involved and how different movements around the world are trying to stop the war. Group run and walk: Front Runners & Walkers San Diego is meeting for running and walking at the southeast corner of Sixth Avenue and Laurel Street under the “big tree” in Balboa Park at 6 p.m. Front Runners & Walkers San Diego is a running and walking club for lesbians, gay men, their families and friends. The group provides a number of walking, running and fitness activities, as well as occasional social events. Runs take between three to six miles and walks take two to three miles. Picasso, Miró, Calder: The work of Pablo Picasso, Joan Miro and Alexander Calder is on display at The San Diego Museum of Art from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. This exhibition showcases nearly 50 works by three of the greatest 20th century artists. Picasso, Miró, Calder also includes a diverse selection of works on paper including prints, drawings and paintings rarely on display due to the light-sensitive nature of these works. In addition, the exhibition celebrates the return to view of several important sculptures such as Miró’s monumental bronze Solar Bird and the recently reinstalled Spinal Column by Calder at the front entrance of the Museum. Lesbians Considering Parenting: Progressive Health Services hosts Lesbians Considering Parenting, a workshop, at the Lesbian Health Clinic starting at 7:30 p.m. The workshop addresses lesbian parenting options, including donor insemination, foster parenting, adoption, co-parenting and other issues.
