‘Monty Python’s Spamalot’
Published Thursday, 10-Sep-2009 in issue 1133
Watch out: Arthur, King of the Britons (Christopher Gurr) and his oddball Knights of the Round (casino) Table are back, as never seen in the Middle Ages.
But hurry – Monty Python’s Spamalot, under the auspices of Broadway San Diego, closes this Sunday at San Diego Civic Theatre. Mike Nichols directs this road show.
Spamalot tells the absolutely false (well, let’s say truth challenged) story of how King Arthur found his knights, and got divine instruction to search for that elusive Holy Grail.
Arthur is inspired by the Lady of the Lake, aka Guinevere (Merle Dandridge), a tall diva in slinky dresses made entirely of hand-strung glass beads, who boasts a set of pipes as big as all outdoors (or at least is miked well) – and frequently performs with her own version of Laker Girls.
And there’s the extremely inhospitable French army, driving the Knights out of France and back to England. But without a map, the knights get lost in “a dark and extremely expensive forest.”
Where else will you find tap-dancing knights carrying yellow umbrellas with happy faces? (Gene Kelly doesn’t count.) Or a killer rabbit. Or a monk, noting that the Black Knight has lost his arms in battle, picking up arms for the poor. Or an attempted Broadway musical which won’t get off the ground without at least one Jew in the cast, because “there’s a very small percentile/who enjoy a dancing gentile.”
Yes, many of the jokes are broad, or groaners, or goofy. There are fart jokes, corny jokes, and crazy situations.
But Spamalot is one of the surest bets around for genuine belly laughs.
Monty Python’s Spamalot plays through Sunday, Sept. 13, at San Diego Civic Theatre. Remaining shows Thursday at 7:30 p.m.; Friday at 8 p.m.; Saturday at 2 and 8 p.m.; Sunday at 1 and 6 p.m. For tickets, call 619-570-1100 or Ticketmaster at 800-982-2787.
