Well I’m here in Washington, D.C. for more than a week. I will return to San Diego next week for one day. Then I’ll be off to Portland for four days. Yes, I still support Mayor Sam Adams. My friend Kurt is keeping my cat Nixon (yes, named after the President). You can keep up with me on my blog at GLTNewsNow.com.
This Sunday, thousands of GLBT Americans and our families, friends and allies will be marching through our nation’s capital for full equality, a vision of Cleve Jones and Davis Mixner. I am honored and, yes, proud to be one of the March’s four national co-chairs. After months of building this weekend’s march, countless meetings and conference calls with hundreds of organizers across the USA, the fruits of our labor will be seen in Washington, D.C. this Sunday, Oct. 11. As many of you know, I have been a national organizer for all of our past four marches on Washington: 2000, 1993, 1986 and 1979. While I do not know what the attendance will be, I do know that the rally will be the most diverse in the history of all the marches. I am proud that I pushed and was a strong supporter for a religious/spiritual (nondenominational) benediction (by Rev. Troy Perry). Our national anthem and “America the Beautiful” will be played and uniformed veterans will be on the stage. Speakers include a former Republican Congressmember and mainstream Latino and African American civil rights leaders. Yes, Lady Gaga will make an appearance and, yes, I will be one of the speakers and will follow Oscar Winner and Milk screenwriter Dustin Lance Black.
Five GLTNewsNow.com writers, including myself, will be giving you complete coverage starting Oct. 9. It has been a long, hard road, and I marvel at the energy and leadership of the March’s new GLBT generation of activists. I am proud this weekend to turn over the torch of activism to a new generation!
What keeps this old queen going after more than 40 years of activism is my hope and belief in our younger generation, both straight and GLBT. It is them that will change America for the better, and it is the younger generation that will build an American society of true diversity, acceptance, compassion, equality and, yes, love. I must admit that while all of my five lovers/partners in my life have been “straight/bisexual,” none have been really “GLBT and bisexual.” That is, they loved drag/trans only.
There is now a truly bisexual generation and community. I love MTV, which spotlights all aspects of young America. MTV’s “True Life” weekly program spotlighted the young, bisexual community, and it was very enlightening and educational for all. Yes people, there are individuals who truly love both men and women and enjoy both relationships. More and more young people are becoming bisexual and, thus, we should all be more loving, accepting and welcoming of our “B” sisters/brothers of our GLBT!
The City of San Diego’s Human Relations Commission recently voted unanimously to urge the U.S. Postal Service to issue a stamp in honor of Harvey Milk. I am proud to have introduced this action item to the commission and an official letter has been sent to the National Citizen’s Stamp Advisory Committee. State Senator Mark Leno and I discussed my idea, and he is going to rightfully take a leadership role in this national campaign. Senator Leno informed me that Governor Schwarzenegger will be announcing this month if he will sign Leno’s Senate bill to make May 22 a state-wide holiday in honor of Milk. So keep sending those e-mails and letters to the Governor to urge him to sign the Harvey Milk bill, SB572. By the way, the Governor announced that Harvey Milk will be inducted to the California Hall of Fame on Dec. 1 in our state capital. Word is that Stuart Milk and others will not attend this ceremony if the Governor veto’s the bill. I respect Stuart Milk, and I will not be attending if he does not, nor should anyone invited. Stuart and I have had some fun phone calls lately, and he is looking forward to attending the San Diego Equality California Awards set for Nov. 14 at the Museum of Man.
Hey, its time to show our support and love to our brothers and sisters of North County Pride. This Saturday, North County Pride will host its annual pride celebration in Oceanside from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Everyone is invited. I attended last year, and it was wonderful. Special guests include Oceanside City Councilmember Esther Sanchez, San Diego City Councilmember Carl DeMaio, future State Assemblymember Toni Atkins and lots of great entertainment, outstanding food and a fun time for all. So get out there and support Max Disposti and all the great North County activists!
One of the biggest social events of the season is the San Diego LGBT Community Center’s 36th annual Anniversary Gala, happening this Saturday, Oct. 10 at the beautiful Paradise Point Resort in Mission Bay. It’s always a whose who of, not only, our community, but our city and other communities, all coming together to help our GLBT community. Festive black tie is encouraged, and it’s always an evening of unbelievable food, socializing and pride. For more information or to purchase tickets visit www.thecentersd.kintera.org/gala09 or call 619-2077, ext. 209.
For six years, the great guys at Martinis Above Fourth have raised more than $85,000 during the holidays through auctioning of some of the most beautiful and fabulous holiday wreaths ever seen on the West Coast! The wreaths benefit the Queen Eddie Conlon Youth Fund, which assists GLBT youth from 14 years and above with school books, cloths, food, shelter and bus passes. They even recently helped a family, who could not afford burial costs, to bury their son.
The annual fun and merry event has been set for Dec. 14 at Martini’s and is co-sponsored by Rufskin Denim, San Diego Pix, Imperial Court and numerous businesses. This year, the wreaths will be on full display on its annual-wreath-auction page starting the day after Thanksgiving at www.martinisabovefourth.com. So mark your calendars, and lets all support this event and make it bigger, better and more fabulous than ever before!
