“Sexually transmitted HIV is preventable, thus there is no excuse for sero converting in the 21st century. After 30 years AIDS/HIV should no longer be a concern to our community, as I will no longer let it concern me.”
Dear Editor:
In 2003 participation in the AIDS walk was deemed important because of the “California stat budget crisis, [and] fewer government funds available for those living with HIV/AIDS.” In 2004 it was “San Diego HIV/AIDS need your support more then ever,” because government has “failed to step up to battle the increasing challenges of HIV/AIDS today.” In 2005 our “participation [was] critical because of hurricane Katrina increasing “the competition for dollars.” Then in 2006, “Despite the extensive education and outreach support in the county, San Diego still has a high number of people infected with HIV/AIDS, third highest in the state.” In 2007 Miss Delores wrote of “The rich history [and] tremendous impact of AIDS Walk San Diego...It is our mission to educate others to prevent the spread of this disease.” She described the walk as “life affirming event.”
Last year there was something new from the centers chief officer, “A promise to remember.” “Until there is a cure, we’ll keep walking. It’s the promise we made when AIDS walk began...It is a simple way to make a difference.” AND this year it was , “After 20 years, AIDS Walk more important then ever.” I do not see where this event HAS made a difference.
As Miss Delores stated twice in her commentary, people are still getting infected. I have yet to identify any HIV prevention programs given by the Center. Sexually transmitted HIV is preventable, thus there is no excuse for sero converting in the 21st century. After 30 years AIDS/HIV should no longer be a concern to our community, as I will no longer let it concern me. The irregularities at the Center are well known and until there is changes made, starting at the top, I will no longer concern myself with it either. Exactly where can its “tremendous impact” be seen?
