Armed with the pansy, Timothy’s fading spirit soars as he puckishly imposes a new reality by turning much of his narrow-minded town gay, beginning with the rugby-jock of his dreams. Ensnaring family, friends and enemies in this heart-wrenching chaos, Timothy forces them to live his kind of life for themselves. Yo La Tengo: Alternative rock band Yo La Tengo perform at Soma at 8 p.m. Despite achieving limited mainstream success, Yo La Tengo has been called “the quintessential critics’ band” and maintains a strong cult following. Their sound has been characterized as a cross between Sonic Youth and The Velvet Underground. Last month, the band released its newest album, Popular Songs. Uniting through Song: The Gay Men’s Chorus of San Diego (GMCSD) and the San Diego Men’s Chorus (SDMC) – the two gay men’s choruses that will merge this December – hosts Uniting through Song at artistic director Gary Holt’s residence at 5 p.m. The event is a “special kick-off evening” to hear the choruses together and celebrate their merger and upcoming season. Dialogue on Brakhage: Filmmaker Neil Kendricks will discuss the work of experimental film pioneer Stan Brakhage at the San Diego Museum of Art (SDMA) at 7 p.m. Over the course of five decades, Brakhage created a large and diverse body of work, exploring a variety of formats, approaches and techniques that included scratching on film and the use of multiple exposures. Interested in mythology and inspired by music, poetry and visual phenomena, Brakhage sought to reveal the universal in the particular, exploring themes of birth, mortality, sexuality and innocence. ‘Shut Up Sweet Charlotte’: Reaction Productions present Shut Up Sweet Charlotte at the Birch North Park Theatre at 8 p.m. The time is 1927 and Charlotte Hollis is a young woman whose happiness is cut short when she offers her hand to her suitor John, who shortly finds himself without a hand, a head or a life. Moving to the present day, Charlotte is aged, crazed and shunned by the locals who think she murdered her lover those many years earlier. Charlotte’s disheveled maid, Velma, is her sole companion – at least until cousin Miriam (drag sensation Varla Jean Merman) shows up to “help” with things.
