“The Westboro Baptist haters were recognized by our community! If our community would not have staged a counter protest, they would have been ignored and they would have felt invisible and marginalized in San Diego.”

Dear Editor:

I just read the Union-Tribune article found here (http://www3.signonsandiego.com/stories/2009/oct/17/hundreds-counter-protest-against-jews-gays/?uniontribwhere) which reported that 6 people came from the Westboro Baptist Church to spread their hate. (I’m assuming the SD Tribune got the number of 6 correct as I did not attend.)

It only took 6 haters to get hundreds if not thousands of people upset in our community. There were not ignored, they were not marginalized. The Westboro Baptist haters were recognized by our community!

If our community would not have staged a counter protest, they would have been ignored and they would have felt invisible and marginalized in San Diego.

So, who won last weekend? The hundreds if not thousands of upset (and stressed out) gays in our community or the Westboro Baptist haters?

All the time, energy and money that our entire community spent—to stage a counter protest for 6 people—was it worth it?
