LTJ Bukem: LTJ Bukem and MC Conrad will perform at Spin at 9:30 p.m. Viewed as an innovator in the drum and bass movement, LTJ Bukem is known for developing an accessible alternative to the genre’s fast-paced energies. Bukem’s style pays homage to the Detroit-based sound of early techno but also incorporates still earlier influences, particularly the mellow, melodic sonorities of 1970s-era jazz fusion. MC Conrad, best known for his collaboration with Bukem, and has a distinct vocal style that mixes will with his drum and bass sound. Spin is located at 2028 Hancock St. in Mission Hills. Queer cinema: The Women’s Resource Center will screen Fabulous: The Story of Queer Cinema at the San Diego LGBT Community Center at 7 p.m. Fabulous is a chronological look at US gay and lesbian films from 1947 to 2005. Films reviewed include everything from Kenneth Anger’s Fireworks to Ang Lee’s Brokeback Mountain. The narrative groups the pictures around various themes including: films about AIDS and dying, emergence of romantic comedy, transgender films, films about diversity and various cultures and mainstream Hollywood drama. Halloween Carnival: Family Matters hosts Halloween Carnival at The Center at 4 p.m. The event features carnival games, arts, crafts, cupcake decorating, dinner and a costume contest. DJ Laura Jane will host. There will be a comfortable room for parents of infants and toddlers (under two) to relax, socialize and show off their costumes and a cool and spooky area for kids 9 and up to hang out and watch a Halloween movie after dinner. Prizes will be awarded for funniest, scariest, cutest, most original and best family costume. The event costs $5 per person. Children two and under are free. Evans for a night of art, friends, food and music to benefit the alcohol and drug treatment agency. Boarding time is 6:30 p.m. with dancing until midnight. Battle of the Bar Queens: Urban Mo’s and Baja Betty’s hosts Tantrums & Tiaras – Battle of the Bar Queens at the Birch North Park Theatre at 7 p.m. The event is a camp drag pageant executed as a spoof on Miss America. A hundred percent of the proceeds raised will benefit Mama’s Kitchen. The Birch North Park Theatre is located at 2891 University Ave. in North Park. This is a 21 and up event. Female oppression: New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof will talk about his encounters with African and Asian women struggling in dire circumstances and how they, despite their suffering, are providing hope and help to others at the University of California San Diego’s Price Center Ballroom West at 7 p.m. Kristof will also be signing his new book, “Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide,” a call to arms against what he views as our era’s most pervasive human rights violation: the oppression of women in the developing world. ‘Bent’: The ion Theatre Company and the Diversionary Theater will perform Bent at the Diversionary Theater at 7:30 p.m. This co-production with the Diversionary Theater is the 30th anniversary of the seminal play by Martin Sherman. Bent is about a man named Max, who is gay and is sent to Dachau concentration camp under the Nazi regime. He tries to deny he is gay and gets a yellow label (the one for Jews) instead of pink (the one for gays). In the camp, Max falls in love with his fellow prisoner Horst, who wears his pink label with pride. The Diversionary Theatre is located at 4545 Park Blvd. in University Heights.
