LGBT Resource Center anniversary: The University of California San Diego’s LGBT Resource Center will celebrate its 10th anniversary at 4 p.m. The LGBT Resource Center at UCSD is a diverse, open and public space for all members of the university community to explore issues relating to sexual and gender identities, practices and politics. Kate Kendell: The San Diego Democratic Club will host a reception providing attendees the opportunity to meet National Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR) executive director Kate Kendell at the Noel-Baza Fine Art Gallery at 5:30 p.m. Kendell is a lifelong champion of GLBT civil and human rights, specializing in the areas of GLBT family law, youth rights, elder law and GLBT immigration and asylum and has fought tirelessly for GLBT legal protections and the advancement of equality. Boston Marriage: The Compass Theatre will perform Boston Marriage at 2 p.m. The 1999 play by American playwright David Mamet concerns two women at the turn of the 20th century who are in a “Boston marriage,” a relationship between two females that may involve both physical and emotional intimacy. Swimming: Different Strokes Swim Team will meet for a workout swim at the Brian Bent Memorial Pool at Coronado High School at 7p.m. Different Strokes Swim Team (DSST) is an all-inclusive lesbian, gay, straight, bisexual, transgender, fast, slow, healthy, happening, totally cool, incredibly fun swim team. Members swim for fitness, for the friendly social atmosphere, to get in a quick workout or for rehab from injuries. Everyone is welcome and member ages range from 18-80. DSST welcomes swimmers of all abilities from competitive college swimmers to novice swimmers and everyone in between. Beloved Daughters: The Museum of Photographic Arts will exhibit Beloved Daughters: Photographs by Fazal Sheikh from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Beloved Daughters unites two projects by photographer and activist Fazal Sheikh. The exhibition focuses on women from two specific communities in India. The first project, Moksha (Heaven), portrays the northern Indian city of Vrindavan, where dispossessed widows go to devote themselves to Krishna and seek moksha: final release from the cycle of death and rebirth. Sheikh’s next project, Ladli (Beloved Daughter) portrays the lives of girls and young women in a society where, despite progressive laws, their human, civil, and economic rights are routinely suppressed. Cultivating food justice: Heather Fenney of Community Services Unlimited, Inc. and Ellee Igoe of San Diego International Rescue Committee will discuss cultivating justice through sustainable food systems at the San Diego Natural History Museum at 6:30 p.m. With nearly one-third of all greenhouse gas emissions coming from the food and agriculture sector, it’s critical that food-system changes be part of any effort to reduce and reverse effects of global warming. Learn where the conventional/global food system has gone wrong, and how building a local, sustainable and just food system can help get us back on course. Admission is $5. Group run and walk: Front Runners & Walkers San Diego will meet for running and walking at the southeast corner of Sixth Avenue and Laurel Street under the “big tree” in Balboa Park at 6 p.m. Front Runners & Walkers San Diego is a running and walking club for lesbians, gay men, their families and friends. The group provides a number of walking, running and fitness activities, as well as occasional social events. Runs take between three to six miles and walks take two to three miles. Cocktails for Choice: Planned Parenthood of San Diego & Riverside Counties will host Cocktails for Choice, a networking event aimed at 25-40 year olds who support a woman’s right to choose, at the Mosaic Wine Bar on Thursday, Nov. 12 at 7 p.m. The event includes free appetizers, prizes and music.
