Riverdance: The San Diego Civic Theatre hosts a presentation of Riverdance starting at 8 p.m. Riverdance is a thunderous celebration of Irish music, song and dance that has tapped its way onto the world stage thrilling millions of people around the globe. Prokofiev’s Fifth Symphony: The San Diego Symphony Orchestra will perform Sergei Prokofiev’s Fifth Symphony at Copley Symphony Hall at 8 p.m. Fourteen years had passed since Prokofiev’s last symphony. World War II was still raging during the symphony’s gestation, and Prokofiev composed the symphony in a safe haven run by the Soviet Union in one month in the summer of 1944. At the time Prokofiev said the symphony was “a hymn to free and happy Man, to his mighty powers, his pure and noble spirit.” The symphony landed Prokofiev on the cover of Time magazine in 1945. Shaun Reeves: Shaun Reeves will perform at Spin at 9:30 p.m. A Detroit native who moved to Berlin four years ago, Shaun Reeves has been enthralling European audiences with his own highly distinctive mixture of American house, both classic and contemporary, and the deepest, most cutting edge aspects of minimal techno and tech-house. Cabaret night: The Jean Isaacs San Diego Dance Theater will host a night of cabaret at Dance Place San Diego. John Diaz and Bradley Lundberg will perform nn emotional duet to Jeff Buckley’s “Hallelujah.” The steamy and sexy program takes its cue from mood, lighting and atmosphere of an intimate cabaret nightclub. ‘Monday’s Girls’: The San Diego Museum of Art will screen Monday’s Girls at 2 p.m. Monday’s Girls (1993) explores the conflict between modern individualism and traditional communities in today’s Africa through the eyes of two young Waikiriki women from the Niger delta. Although both come from leading families in the same large island town, Florence looks at the iria women’s initiation ceremony as an honor, while Azikiwe, who has lived in the city for ten years, sees it as an indignity. Ngozi Onwurah, director of such feminist classics as Coffee Coloured Children and Body Beautiful, herself an Anglo-Nigerian, turns a wry but sympathetic eye on the cross-cultural confusions. Through the Lens: The Museum of Photographic Arts (MOPA) will exhibit Through the Lens, its fourth annual youth exhibition, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Through the Lens features the artwork of over 80 students from San Diego, ranging from 3rd–12th grades. Student participants of MOPA’s education department photography and filmmaking programs by produced the works. Each program is designed to develop students’ visual literacy skills, allowing them to analyze, interpret and communicate in the countless visual mediums they encounter. These images showcase the students creativity and artistic expression while demonstrating the impact of photography as a powerful tool for communicating ideas and emotions. ‘Whisper House’: Duncan Sheik and company will perform Whisper House at the Old Globe Theatre at 8 p.m. Tony and Grammy Award-winning songwriter Duncan Sheik follows up his Broadway sensation, Spring Awakening, with this haunting new musical. At the height of World War II, Christopher, an imaginative young boy, is sent to live with an aunt he’s never met: Lilly, a reclusive woman who serves as the keeper of a remote lighthouse. Not yet comfortable in his surroundings, Christopher begins to hear strange music no one else can hear seeping through the walls. It doesn’t take long for him to suspect the lighthouse may be haunted, and these ghosts tell him that Yasujiro, a Japanese worker that Lilly has employed, should not be trusted. Is Christopher’s imagination getting the best of him? Or are these ghosts warning Christopher about the very real dangers that lie ahead?
