“How on earth does an executive director get to hand pick such a close family member to sit on the board that is supposed to oversee the executive director?”
Dear Editor,
As a longtime supporter and volunteer in our community, I am disappointed with some of the recent actions of both the pride board and staff. For the sake of fairness, maybe this major unknown issue about Mr. Ron deHarte’s intentions and self-dealings could be allowed to be discussed (in a Very civil manner) at Sunday’s townhall gathering: Mr. Ron deHarte with the assistance of former co-chair Anne Hewett brought on to the pride board as a sitting board member Leane Marchese, the mother of his 2 children. She was on the board for three years (2006, 2007 and 2008). Leane is currently the Executive Director of ElderHelp San Diego (619 284 9281). Ron and Leane co-parent their children together on a regular basis and have been doing so for many years. How on earth does an executive director get to hand pick such a close family member to sit on the board that is supposed to oversee the executive director? Neither Ron nor Leane think there was anything wrong with that! Go ahead and ask them. For a while, there was talk that Leane should have been an Officer of the pride organization!

“I was disappointed to see that three of her top ten picks were shows from Los Angeles.”
Dear Editor,
The end of year “best of” lists are always a treat and good fodder for water cooler (or in this era- Facebook or Twitter) bantering. As an arts lover, supporter and advocate, I pay special attention to theater, music and dance wrap-ups. With great respect and gratitude to the talent and enthusiasm of theater critic Jean Lowerison (thanks for everything Jean!), I was disappointed to see that three of her top ten picks were shows from Los Angeles. San Diego is a strong and growing theater town and local productions with extraordinary talent are presented by theater artists and playwrights every week. To say that 30% of the best shows were seen in LA just adds to the perception that San Diego is not first rate. This is just not true!
The work on San Diego stages this year has been truly extraordinary and kudos to all who continue to produce and present work that inspires, entertains and engages.
Personally, I’d have a hard time narrowing my favorites to just 10. But if you want to see them, I just might post them on Facebook!
Curtain up and keep the arts coverage coming!
Thanks.
Toni Robin
