Free H1n1 Flu Vaccination Clinic, Saturday, January 23
Family Health Centers of San Diego will offer free H1N1 vaccinations on a first-come, first-served basis on Saturday morning, Jan. 23, at its Sherman Heights and North Park locations. Sherman Heights will begin at 9 a.m. and North Park will begin at 8:30 a.m. All members of the public are welcome. Public health officials now encourage everyone to be immunized, not just those considered to be in high risk categories.
These free vaccination clinics are offered on behalf of the County of San Diego, which has contracted with Family Health Centers to provide this service. The Sherman Heights clinic will have 400 doses of injectable vaccine for distribution on Saturday and the North Park clinic will have at least 300 doses. While no appointment is needed, the public is advised to check in with clinic staff before getting in line to verify that the supply of vaccine has not been exhausted. Sherman Heights will close at 1 p.m. and North Park will close at 12:30 p.m. unless they run out of vaccine sooner.
H1N1 and seasonal flu vaccine, as well as affordable general medical care, are available at other times and locations throughout the Family Health Centers network of community clinics. For information or an appointment, call 619-515-2300 or go to www.fhcsd.org.
GLBT groups partner with Red Cross
Following a devastating 7.0 magnitude earthquake in Haiti, a coalition of GLBT organizations have gathered together in partnership with the American Red Cross to raise funds for immediate application in Haitian disaster relief efforts. Canvass for a Cause and coalition partners Courage Campaign, Marriage Equality USA, Equality California, the San Diego Alliance for Marriage Equality, Empowering Spirits Foundation, and the San Diego Equality Campaign invite the community to join them in helping the victims of the earthquake in Haiti on Tuesday, Jan. 12.
“We are excited to be spearheading an LGBT effort to coordinate with the Red Cross on the disaster efforts in Haiti,” said Tres Watson, Canvass for a Cause Executive Director. “The disaster is such a massive tragedy that we felt compelled to take action and provide some sort of response from the LGBT community to help in the effort. I think it’s important to show that the LGBT community is also concerned with issues beyond marriage equality, and take an active interest in the greater world community as well.”
American Red Cross of San Diego and Imperial Counties’ Manager of Development and Communications Ellen Agey thanked Canvass for a Cause for their “commitment to humanitarianism” and thanked them for reaching out to the Red Cross as a partner in the fundraising effort to provide relief to the victims in Haiti.
Canvass for a Cause is an organization that is dedicated to growing the progressive movement through education, fundraising, training, and donations of human resources to causes throughout the progressive movement. More information can be found on www.canvassforacause.org.

Need assistance with applying for medical marijuana?
Doctors are recommending that patients who suffer with chronic pain, depression, anxiey, cancer and HIV/AIDS talk to their doctor about prescribing medical marijuana. To qualify for medical marijuana, patients need a valid California ID (a California address), medical recording showing the existence of a current or prior condition, surgery, treatment or medical diagnosis. Locating a physician to recommend medical marijuana and provide the legal paperwork necessary to enter a medical marijuana dispensary is not as difficult as some might think. A doctor’s visit and paperwork costs approximately $100. The Southern Lites Collective Inc. is offering their assistance to those who have questions or need help applying for medical marijuana. South Lites Collective Inc. is located at 5945 Mission Gorge Rd., Ste. 6 in San Diego. For more information, call 619-283-9333 or visit www.southernlitescollective.com.
