Women’s Fest 2010 celebrates strength in diversity
The San Diego LGBT Community Center’s Women’s Resource Center will once again bring local women together for a day-long festival of workshops, entertainment and resources for lesbian, bisexual and transgender (LBT) women. “Women’s Fest 2010: Strength in Diversity” will take place on Saturday, May 8, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., at The Center (3909 Centre Street, Hillcrest). This year’s festival will focus on nourishing the diversity within the women’s community as well as the ways in which we can come together to form a healthier and more empowered entity.
“We are so lucky to have so many types of women in our community – lesbian moms, bisexual activists, transgender women, lesbians of color, college students, senior citizens and the list goes on,” explains Abby Schwartz, coordinator of The Center’s Women’s Resource Center. “We have so much to learn from one another and our experiences, and Women’s Fest is the perfect venue to do so. We hope that this day of workshops, discussion and entertainment will bring the diverse facets of our community together in a whole new way.”
Last year’s Women’s Fest featured 15 workshops and more than 35 women-friendly vendors and community partners. Workshop and vendor applications for Women’s Fest 2010 will be available beginning March 1. For more information on Women’s Fest or to obtain an application, please contact Abby Schwartz at 619-692-2077, ext. 212, or email aschwartz@thecentersd.org.
Planned Parenthood Receives anonymous donation for HPV vaccine
Planned Parenthood of San Diego & Riverside Counties recently received an anonymous gift of nearly $300,000 to provide Gardasil, the HPV vaccine, at its family planning centers. “Gardasil significantly reduces a woman’s risk of cervical cancer because it is 100 percent effective in protecting against 70 percent of the strains of HPV that cause cervical cancer,” said Katharine Sheehan, M.D., Medical Director of the local Planned Parenthood.
Although Gardasil is available to girls as young as nine years old, the Planned Parenthood gift is specifically aimed to support vaccinating 19-26 year-old women. “The Vaccines For Children Program offers the HPV vaccine to females 18 years old and younger, so we felt it was important to reach a population that is no longer eligible for that immunization program,” said Dr. Sheehan. “The HPV vaccine is effective for women over 18 years old, and Planned Parenthood is pleased to offer it.”
For more than 90 years, Planned Parenthood has been America’s most trusted provider of reproductive health care services. Through 19 centers in San Diego and Riverside counties, Planned Parenthood provides contraception, testing and treatment for sexually transmitted infections, emergency contraception, pregnancy testing, and abortion services. To schedule an appointment for Gardasil, contraception or testing and treatment for sexually transmitted infections, please visit www.planned.org or call toll-free at 888-743-PLAN (7526).
