‘Pippi Longstocking’: The San Diego Junior Theatre will perform a stage adaptation of Astrid Lindgren’s Pippi Longstocking at the Casa del Prado Theatre at 7 p.m. Pippi Longstocking is a fictional character in a series of children’s books by Swedish author Lindgren and adapted into multiple films and television series. Nine-year-old Pippi is unconventional, assertive, and has superhuman strength, being able to lift her horse one-handed without difficulty. She frequently mocks and dupes adults she encounters, an attitude likely to appeal to young readers; however, Pippi usually reserves her worst behavior for the most pompous and condescending of adults. ‘Diary of a Madman’: John Leguizamo will perform his new autobiographical show Dairy of a Madman at the La Jolla Playhouse at 8 p.m. In Diary of a Madman Leguizamo explodes with energy taking audiences on a non-stop fever-pitch adventure, heating up the stage with vivid accounts of where he’s been and the colorful characters who’ve shaped different facets of his life. From his adolescent memories in Queens, New York, to the early days of his acting career and beyond – with stories of the outrageous 80’s avant-garde theater scene and anecdotes from major movie sets and roles opposite some of Hollywood’s biggest film stars –Madman is in turns uproarious and heartfelt, laying it bare for those along for the ride. ‘Mending Monologues’: The Diversionary Theatre hosts a performance of The Mending Monologues starting at 2 p.m. in University Heights. The Mending Monologues is an all-male performance group inspired by Eve Ensler’s annual V-Day production of The Vagina Monologues. The show is a love letter to women, a healing for men, and a call to end violence in all its forms. Tickets start at $20. Ex-gay conference: St. Paul’s Episcopal Cathedral will host a conference on the ex-gay movement at 9 a.m. The conference will help educate people about the truth of such claims and the legacy of harm the movement has left behind. A plenary and series of workshops will take place to expose and counteract the movement. The conference will feature ex-gay therapy survivor Daniel Gonzales, Wayne Besen, founder of Truth Wins Out and founder and editor of Box Turtle Bulletin, Jim Burroway. House of México: The House of Pacific Relations will host House of Mexico at 2 p.m.
The annual event features entertainment, food and drink. The entertainment varies from Mariachi musicians to folklorico dance groups representing different regions of Mexico. Food and beverages at the event will vary from tostadas to carne asada to enchiladas. Beverages sold will be traditional drinks such as horchata, a rice drink and jamaica, which is made from the bibiscus flowers. Admission is free. Seeing Beauty: The Museum of Photographic Arts will exhibit Seeing Beauty from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Seeing Beauty explores the aesthetics of beauty, expressed through the eyes of various photographers throughout the history of the medium, including Bill Brandt, Walker Evans, Mary Ellen Mark, Edward Weston, Minor White and Aaron Siskind. The exhibition presents a range of genres in photography, such as portraiture, abstraction, landscape and still life.
