I’m off to Vancouver, Canada (post Olympics) for almost a week. Then I have a little rest before my New York trip, and trust me, I’d rather stay home and watch “Project Runway”!
World renown sports legend Greg Louganis was inducted into the San Diego Hall of Champions at its 64th annual gala event in Balboa Park. The San Diego native Louganis received the biggest ovation of all five inductees and mentioned in his moving acceptance speech that he was gay, a person living with AIDS and in the recovery community. Louganis was also honored by the San Diego County Board of Supervisors. Supervisor Ron Roberts spoke about how Greg Louganis has become an inspiration and hero to American youth, especially GLBT youth. Yes, Greg Louganis is a true role model for so many around the world.
National gay veteran activist and University of San Diego student Joseph Rocha will be honored at the first major gay event at the world renown Playboy Mansion this coming Monday night in Los Angeles. Rocha will receive the prestigious annual Harvey Milk Civil Rights Award for being one of the most known and articulate national spokespersons for lifting the ban on “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.” Joseph Rocha’s book is scheduled to be released late this year. I have the honor to have been asked to present this award to Rocha along with State Commissioner Michael Weiss. Trust me, I’ll give you a full report on this Playboy Mansion event in my next column.
This past Monday, in our state capital, at the inaugural ceremony of the 68th speaker of the California State Assembly, John A. Pérez became the first openly gay speaker. While my health didn’t permit my attendance, I appreciated the official invitation, which included an ecumenical service at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament and an inaugural reception. Speaker Pérez (doesn’t that sound great?) is a friend and frequent visitor to San Diego. Last year he was the keynote speaker at the Milk breakfast. We love you John and truly for our community, you are the pride of California.

The third annual Lambda Archives gala drew many VIPS including Senator Christine Kehoe, County Supervisor Ron Roberts, District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis, former deputy mayor Toni Atkins, City Councilmembers Todd Gloria and Carl DeMaio, who served as MCs of the event. While, yes, I am the founder of this annual event – Heroes, Pioneers & Trailblazers – and I was the 2010 co-chair, all credit must go to event co-chair Sharna Langlais and Archives President Frank Nobiletti and their hard working committee and student volunteers who put this event together. I was absent a lot. They all did a great job, and the event was another success. Bravo to videographer Alex Miller-Pastore who did an outstanding job. Award winning singer Ria Carey’s rendition of the national anthem was spectacular! The San Diego Lambda Archives will be working with city officials about getting our archives a building and permanent home. Everyday we are losing our history. Its so important to support and donate to our GLBT archives. Please do so. Thank you. For more information, visit www.lambdaarchives.org.
San Diego Business person and philanthropist Brian Bazinet is well known as the head of Premier Event Catering, which includes all of those infamous concession stunts at the Cricket Amphitheater in South Bay, the Sports Arena and my favorite, the Kobey’s Swap Meet! Bazinet is a past chair of the San Diego LGBT Community Center and a Mama’s Kitchen volunteer. He also financially supports progressive candidates for public office. His big company also caters corporate events, weddings etc. But what he is infamous for is his tasty and award winning Southern Fried Chicken Sticks, Philadelphia Cheese Steaks and of course his Super Kettle Popcorn! Next time you’re at the Kobey’s Swap Meet, check out those concession stands. For more information, visit www.premiereventcatering.com.
