AFCSL action heats up in June
Extasis and Daniel Greer tied for first place
Published Thursday, 05-Jun-2003 in issue 806
With the America’s Finest City Softball League heading into the final month of the spring season, the race is on for the coveted first place title in seven of the eight contested divisions.
The Moby Dick’s Hitmen, the only D1 team in the Open Division, had the week off, but in D2 Daniel Greer dropped a 15-9 game to the D3 Brians’ Bears then had a close call with Flicks, who they were able to beat, 9-8. The Greer loss opened the door for Extasis to move into a tie for first place in the league with their 10-7 win against The Abbey Saints.
In D3 play, the Bears picked up an impressive win against the Moby Dick’s Trojans, 10-9, to put them in the lead in that division. The Trojans struggled in their second game, losing, 12-9, to the D4 Bourbon Street Gators, who looked like a whole new team this week, taking out the Trojans and the Abbey Saints, 13-11. The losses for Moby’s sets them back to second place, two games behind the Bears in D3, while the pair of wins for the Gators improves their record to 3-11 for the season in D4.
In D4 play, The Center Starz avenged their loss to Team Star two weeks ago by beating them, 11-8, to regain the first place position in that division. Team Star did pick up a win against the Viejas Fire, 10-7, to maintain their hold on second place in the division, and the Starz fought back after falling behind early on against the Xila Zephyrs to win the game, 12-6.
The Gay and Lesbian Times sponsored Live and Let Live Alano Club shook things up in D5 this week as they handed the J&B Tornados their first loss of the season in a 12-8 game. The loss puts the Tornados in a tie for first place in D5 with We ROK, who beat Redwing, 19-2, this weekend. Last, but certainly not least, in the Open Division D6, Red Envelope continues to rule with their 17-4 win against The Bandits.
In the Women’s Division, Moby Dick’s had the week off, which left the B Division teams to play amongst themselves. The league leaders knocked each other around some to maintain the three-way tie for first place in the division.
First up, Aberration beat up on the Boxing Club with a 22-6 runaway victory. In their second game, however, the Ono Sushi Sliders edged out Aberration with a 15-14 win to balance thing out. The Sliders kept the momentum up for their second game, when they posted an impressive 17-4 win over Powerhouse Gym. Powerhouse took their shots at the Boxing Club and beat them, 14-5, to maintain their position along with the Sliders and Aberration for the first place tie.
In the Women’s C Division, Hairspray maintained their hold on first place with a 7-0 victory against the Flame, then took care of the second place team in the division, Clean Sweep, beating them 10-5. Clean Sweep made up for the loss, beating In Contempt 10-1. Meanwhile, in the C Rec Division, second place Hamburger Mary’s upset first place Creative Futons, beating them 12-2.
Softball season continues this weekend with games in Poway at the Sportsplex and in Mira Mesa at Hourglass Park. For a complete schedule of games, visit the league online at www.afcsl.com.
