Six Women Artists: Brokers Building Gallery is hosting an opening reception for a new exhibition called Six Women Artists at 4 p.m. The exhibit features work by four painters and two photographers connected by their love of art and the support they offer one another. A night of Indian music: Renowned sitar virtuoso, composer, educator Kartik Seshadri will perform with friends at the Sherwood Auditorium at Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego at 8 p.m. Seshadri’s playing is marked for its expressive beauty, rich tonal sensibility and extraordinary rhythmic intricacy. Cine Gay events: The San Diego Latino Film Festival’s Cine Gay Showcase is hosting several events throughout the day. Two films will be screened at the UltraStar Mission Valley Cinemas at Hazard Center in Mission Valley (7510 Hazard Center Dr. in Mission Valley): Dzi Croquette at 5 p.m. and Chica Busca Chica (Girl Seeks Girl) at 7:30 p.m. In addition, Cine Mujer Party, a celebration honoring women filmmakers, will take place at the US Grant Grill (326 Broadway in Downtown) at 9 p.m. The Cine Gay Showcase highlights the experiences of gay life in different corners of the world, underlining the universal experience as well as the unique expressions of the Latin GLBT community.

Kuumba Fest: The Lyceum Theatre will host the 18th annual Kuumba Fest at 6 p.m. The festival promises positive cultural images, healthy challenges and spiritual rejuvenation in addition to vendors, fashion, cultural art, music, food, drumming, dance, libations. St. Patrick’s Day parade and festival: The Irish Congress of Southern California will host the 30th annual St. Patrick’s Day parade and festival at 11 a.m. The parade celebrating Irish culture starts at Sixth Avenue and Laurel Street, while the festival will be held at Sixth Avenue and Quince, both along side Balboa Park. The festival will continue till 5:30 p.m. and features Celtic performers, a youth stage, food, vendors and a beer garden. Admission is free. Walk for Haiti: High Tech High (HTH) for Haiti will host Walk for Haiti at De Anza Cove at Mission Bay at 8:30 a.m. All proceeds from the Walk for Haiti event will be channeled to charities that are directly impacting the lives of earthquake survivors in Haiti: Doctors Without Borders and Yele Haiti. HTH for Haiti is committed to raising money and awareness for the ongoing needs of Haitian people as a result of January’s devastating earthquake. Those affected by the earthquake in Haiti will need short and long term assistance; therefore, we are inspired to positively impact the lives of as many earthquake survivors as possible. ‘The Informant!’: The San Diego Public Library East Village Branch will screen The Informant! at 6:30 p.m. The Informant! is a 2009 dark comedy film directed by Steven Soderbergh. It depicts Mark Whitacre’s involvement as a whistle blower in the lysine price-fixing conspiracy of the mid-1990s, as described in the 2000 nonfiction book, The Informant, by journalist Kurt Eichenwald. The film stars Matt Damon, Richard Steven Horvitz, Scott Bakula, Joel McHale and Melanie Lynskey. Admission is free. Women’s Day breakfast: The Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice at the University of San Diego will host an International Women’s Day breakfast at 7 a.m. In 1995, non-governmental organizations and representatives of the world’s governments convened to hold the fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing, China. Cumulating in the seminal Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, the assembled representatives identified 12 critical issues facing women. At the center of those issues was the plight of the girl child. Fifteen years later, what has changed? Video testimony from girl children in six countries will be supported by local and international speakers and a global update from the 2010 UN Commission on the Status of Women. Xiu Xiu: Xiu Xiu will perform at the Casbah at 8:30 p.m. Xiu Xiu (pronounced shoe-shoe) is an experimental art rock band originally from San Jose, California. The band is the brainchild of queer singer-songwriter Jamie Stewart, who has been its only constant member since its inception. Xiu Xiu’s music draws heavily from several disparate genres including post-punk, 80’s synth pop, noise, ambient, techno, asian percussive music, modern classical and folk. Musically, the band will often blend cacophonous percussion and experimental structures with lush hooks and diverging lyrical styles. Admission starts at $10. First White House meeting: Dr. Doreen Mattingly & Ashley Boyd will discuss the first White House meeting with gay activists from the National Gay Task Force (NGTF) in 1977 at the San Diego LGBT Community Center at 7 p.m. Midge Costanza was Former President Jimmy Carter’s adviser. Costanza caused controversy when she invited fourteen NGTF leaders and activists to the White House at the height of Florida orange juice spokesperson Anita Bryant’s homophobic “Save Our Children” campaign.
