It’s so good to enjoy San Diego for three weeks before I head out of town again. Take the time to enjoy our beautiful city and its neighborhoods. We do, indeed, live in America’s finest city!
Earthquake kits and insurance
The facts are that California has been long overdue for a major earthquake according to the experts. Read my lips: An earthquake will happen one day! First of all get your earthquake kits ready at ACE Hardware (1007 University Ave.). They have flashlights, radios, water and first aid kits. And what about your apartment, house or business? Do you have earthquake insurance? Check out Ron Ferrero at Ferrero Insurance Services. Call him at 619-325-4555 or 619-847-1078. By the way, both give back to our community.
Ron Roberts, a friend for more than two decades
San Diego County Supervisor Ron Roberts has been more than just a friend to our community. He has been like a family member. In fact, at an event at the El Cortez Hotel, Ron was made an “Honorary member of the GLBT community.” It was signed by many major leaders. As Christine Kehoe has always said, Ron Roberts was the fifth vote on the City Council for nondiscrimination ordinances. Ron was an early supporter of AIDS funding when other elected officials ran the other way. Ron, a progressive Republican, endorsed Democratic Kehoe and Toni Atkins for public office and earned the wrath of right-wing Republicans. Ron Roberts himself delivered the recent two millionth meal of Mama’s Kitchen. He funded Stepping Stone and was asked to cut the ribbon of the residency on Central Avenue, which he helped build. He marched in pride parades when others wouldn’t dare think about it. But Ron Roberts has not done this only for our community, he has also done it for the African American, Latino and Asian communities and social service agencies. When Ron Roberts moved to San Diego, he lived in the barrio and has a love for all minorities and our struggles because he wasn’t born with a silver spoon in his mouth.
Yes many of us are disappointed in the recent endorsements of Chris Kehoe and Toni Atkins (although I disagree with the tone of last week’s Gay & Lesbian Times editorial). There are five candidates for this office, and I believe that Toni and Chris could have stayed out until the general election, especially with a well qualified African American school board member like Shelia Jackson.
For over two decades, Ron Roberts has come to our celebrations, benefits, birthday parties, funerals and memorials. While I do not agree with all his stands and votes, I do know the man and his heart, and its in public service for all people.
Easter with 600 kids
Eight-years-ago grandmother Linda Childers and I came together and launched an annual Children’s Easter Egg Hunt with the Imperial Court, and 50 children and their parents showed up. This past Sunday more than 600 children and their families came, and every child got a basket! This annual event is all about love and the generosity of our GLBT community and friends. A very thank you to the Caliph, the Firefighters Association, Bourbon Street, Lei Lounge, Wal-Mart, Redwing, San Diego Rodeo, the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, Family Matters, Merkley Mortuary, San Diego Bears, GLT, Rick Ford, Rich’s, Red Carpet Relief, City Commissioner Robert Gleason, the Imperial Court of Orange County (for all the juices) and the great men and women of Leather Pride, who every year provide bicycles and bikes with helmets to raffle off!

And thank you to everyone who helped, donated and volunteered, especially the Imperial Court and Emperor Brian, Empress Regina and board president Michael Zarbo. Next year, the major co-sponsor of the children’s event will be Councilmember Todd Gloria and his third district office, which provided more than 100 baskets this year. What a wonderful day! God bless you all!
Lunch with Carl and Felipe
Last week I had lunch with Councilmember Carl DeMaio and his new chief of staff Felipe Monroig who hails from Washington, D.C. and is a proud Latino. Carl and Felipe have been friends since they were teenagers (DeMaio was an altar boy). Felipe Monroig is one smart man with a lot of government experience including working for two presidents! Personable, friendly and outgoing, Monroig is, indeed, a welcome addition to DeMaio’s staff. Let’s all give Felipe and his beautiful wife a big welcome.
Chavez Day and labor families
What better way to celebrate and remember Cesar Chavez Day then to march with about 1,000 labor/union families? Cesar Chavez was a fighter for fair wages, better work conditions and the right for workers to form a union. I attended the rally and march part of the way (my bones are too old for the entire route) along with City Commissioner Bruce Abrams and Rabbi Laurie Coskey. What a great turn out and so many families. Brava to Labor Council CEO Lorena Gonzalez (brains and beauty). And it was good to see and talk with Congressmember Bob Filner, state Assemblymember Mary Salas, City Council President Ben Hueso and his two little boys, school board member Shelia Jackson, City Councilmember Todd Gloria and our next councilmember Howard Wayne. The ties between the unions/labor families and the GLBT community continue to grow!
Stephen Whitburn
Yes we all know that I didn’t support Stephen Whitburn for City Council, and it was a rough and at times negative campaign on both sides, but I want to make it clear. I’ve come to know and like Stephen and feel that someday he would make a good elected official. I even helped him get a position on a city board, where he is doing an outstanding job. I hope that this campaign doesn’t turn negative, and we agree to disagree.
Sex addiction
Recently, the issue of sex addition has been all over the news. Is there really such a thing? Yes, there is. We all know straight and gay guys/and some gals who just have to have sex all the time. Even in high school, I knew some girls who would drive me crazy. I like sex as well as anyone else (even old men need lovin’). I’ve had a long time boyfriend who is in the military, and, in fact, no one has ever met him. He is an officer. Almost all of my partners have been bisexual, and, let me tell you, one of them was truly a sex addict.
