FilmOut 2010: FilmOut San Diego will host its annual GLBT film festival at the Birch North Park Theatre from Friday, April 16 through Thursday, April 22. The festival features GLBT films with a wide array of narrative features, documentaries and foreign films that touch upon numerous genres and issues. The event starts off with a series of film shorts on Friday at 7:30 p.m. followed by the Big Gay Musical. In Big Gay Musical, Paul (Daniel Robinson) and Eddie (Joey Dudding) have just begun rehearsals an Off-Broadway musical titled Adam & Steve: Just the Way God Made ‘Em. Their lives mimic those of the characters they are playing on stage. Paul is seeking the ideal male partner, and Eddie finds that his religious upbringing conflicts with his homosexuality. Trans/Les/Gay Mixer: The San Diego LGBT Community Center and Equality California will host its second annual Trans/Les/Gay Mixer at 6:30 p.m. In addition to giving an opportunity for everyone to socialize, this event will include a panel discussion moderated by Tryce Czyczynska where invited guests will discuss their experiences in coming out into the real world and living as transgender, lesbian and gay. We will be particularly focusing on the similarities and differences between the groups. Everyone will be given an opportunity to join in the discussion. Paint-Out: The San Diego Art Institute (SDAI) will host Paint-Out at 9 a.m. Paint/draw/explore Balboa Park, whether you work in oils, acrylics, watercolor, digital, charcoal, pencil, pastels, or mixed media. All artists, amateur to professional, are encouraged to participate. The event is co-hosted by Maura McHugh and Lee Sautereau. Participants will meet back at SDAI for group discussion of work created, potluck meal. Bring food and/or drink to share. Admission is free. EarthFair 2010: San Diego Earth Works will host EarthFair 2010 at Balboa Park at 10 a.m. Produced by 400 volunteers, EarthFair features more than 350 exhibitors, special theme areas, a Food Pavilion, a special Kids’ Activity Area, three entertainment venues, the Children’s Earth Parade, the eARTh Gallery art show, and the Cleaner Car Concourse. EarthFair in Balboa Park is the largest free annual environmental fair in the world and this year is its 20th anniversary. It will also be the 40th anniversary of the first Earth Day. Chorus Cuties: The San Diego Gay Men’s Chorus (SDGMC) will host a bachelor auction Chorus Cuties at Urban Mo’s at 3 p.m. Regardless of your taste, there will be the perfect guy for everyone. Bachelors range from 20s to 50s and all have their unique styles and interests. Event attendees will have the opportunity to mingle with the bachelors prior to bidding to check out compatibility. Sia: Sia will perform at the House of Blues at 8 p.m. Sia Kate Isobelle Furler also simply known as Sia, is an Australian bisexual pop singer. Her sound is an eclectic mix of soul and jazz. At the 2009 Aria Awards, she won the award for Best Music DVD and Some People have Real Problems was nominated for Best Breakthrough Artist Album. Bonobo: Bonobo will perform at Casbah at 8 p.m. Bonobo is the stage name of Simon Green, a British musician, producer and DJ.Green has recorded and performed solo DJ sets under the name Barakas, and together with Robert Luis from Tru Thoughts as Nirobi and Barakas. Bonobo uses a wide variety of samples in its music combined with heavy, often complex basslines. Bonobo’s music generally develops linearly with new elements such as percussion coming in one after the other. Admission is $15. Casbah is located at 2501 Kettner Blvd. in Little Italy. Historic maps of US/Mexico: University of San Diego’s (USD) Student Life Pavilion will exhibit Changing Boundaries: Historic Maps of the U.S.-Mexico Frontier in Exhibit Hall from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. An open reception and presentation on the exhibit starts at 6 p.m.. See the story of how the US-Mexico border evolved over the last four centuries in this exhibit of historic maps. Original maps dated as early as 1600 show the claims, counter claims, conquests and discoveries that resulted in the current line.
