Well I’m off to Orange County to present some awards, have dinner at Disneyland and make my annual pilgrimage to the Richard Nixon Presidential Library!
‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ … Don’t yell!
Hey, I’m an activist from the 1960s and 70s, and I know about demonstrations and sit-ins, but I just don’t get yelling and disrupting an event in honor of one of the GLBT community’s long-time supporter’s Sen. Barbara Boxer and disrupting and yelling at President Obama while he is trying to give his speech. President Obama has made it clear that he supports and is committed to lift the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” ban so let’s give him a chance. Let’s demonstrate and yell at the radical right and our enemies, not our friends and allies.
Politics 101
Some local Republican Party leaders have told me that Assemblymember Nathan Fletcher will be San Diego’s next Pete Wilson moving from the state Assembly to mayor then on to the US senate and then governorship. While I can understand Fletcher being the Grand Old Party’s (GOP) new golden boy, times have changed, and I hope that the popular current assemblymember will become more progressive when it comes to the issue of immigration and GLBT civil rights. Another local GOP golden boy, Councilmember Carl DeMaio, whom the GOP’s state chair once said “is the future of the Republican Party” is raising big bucks for local city propositions he supports, now more than $500,000 in the last seven months. Just this past April 15, DeMaio raised almost $32,000 in just one day. I guess Carl is both the GOP’s golden and green boy! Super popular Assemblymember Mary Salas, who has gotten every major endorsement there is to get, has now received the official endorsement of the Democratic Party for the state Senate.
Could there really be a TV reality show in the future for an infamous local gay personality? Well talks have already been underway for this possibility with some producers. Stay tuned!
Congressmembers Susan Davis and Bob Filner and Councilmember Kevin Faulconer have written to the United States Postal Service in support of a Harvey Milk stamp.
Who will be the next president of the San Diego City Council? Well City Hall sources tell me it will be between councilmembers Tony Young and Todd Gloria, two very qualified men that I respect.
Sen. Christine Kehoe and former Deputy Mayor Toni Atkins have made dual endorsements for the County Supervisor’s race: School Board member Shelia Jackson and Stephen Whitburn. The local GLBT group LGBT Vote has endorsed Ron Roberts for supervisor.
Businessperson Sherman Mendoza of the Caliph spent five hours with San Diego Police Chief Bill Lansdowne riding in his helicopter and patrol car.

The 2010 Nicky Awards, the gay Academy Awards of San Diego, is set for Aug. 20
Milk Diversity Breakfast: 850 tickets already sold!
The second annual Harvey Milk Diversity Breakfast of San Diego County will be another sell out on Friday, May 21 at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront Hotel from 7:30-9 a.m. There are only 15 tables left and trust me, they will sell out soon. So get your tickets/tables today! Special guests and speakers will be West Point graduate Lt. Dan Choi, his lordship, Bishop Christopher Ssenyonjo of the Anglican Church of Uganda and Stuart Milk, nephew of Harvey Milk. The Milk Breakfast is proudly drawing attendance like its brothers’ breakfasts, the annual Martin Luther King and Cesar Chavez’s community breakfasts. Returning as the event’s MCs will be Mayor Jerry Sanders and his beautiful daughter Lisa Sanders. Last years Milk Breakfast drew more than 1,000 San Diegans from all walks of life. This year’s breakfast will leave you busting out with pride and community. I am so proud to be the founder of the breakfast. It’s becoming an event in the tradition of the King and Chavez breakfasts, which bring San Diegans together to break bread and celebrate the life of a great American civil rights icon. The Milk Diversity Breakfast is cosponsored by the San Diego LGBT Community Center and the City of San Diego’s Human Relations Commission. To purchase tickets and or tables, call 619-692-2077, ext. 204 or visit www.thecentersd.kintera.org/milk2010.
Nicky Awards: Aug. 29
Mark your calendars for Sunday, August 29 for the gay Academy Awards of San Diego, yes, the Nicky Awards (founded in 1975). The 2010 board of governors have been named and the co-chairs are Lisa Sanders, La La Too and Allan Stapman. The Nicky Awards are one of the longest running GLBT awards show in the nation with winners receiving Oscar-like trophies in the categories of the arts, social services, business, bars, restaurants, media and individual accomplishments. This year’s Nicky Awards will benefit The Center, GLBT student scholarships and the programs of the Imperial Court. The dates and deadlines for nominating for the 2010 Nicky Awards will soon be announced. Former Governor Gray Davis said this about the award: “The Nicky Awards celebration is a tribute to the men and women of San Diego’s GLBT community who work hard to improve the quality of life for all.” Since the 1970s, the Nicky Awards have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for GLBT causes. For more information, call 619-300-1232.
FilmOut draws thousands
Tonight is the last night of FilmOut San Diego, and it’s been a big success drawing thousands to see movies all week long at the Birch North Park Theatre. On opening night last weekend, we all loved The Big Gay Musical. Councilmember Todd Gloria, Rick Ford and I laughed our butts off and the place was packed with more than 600 people! By the way, the so-called murder/thriller Pornography: A Thriller was one very confusing film and stunk to high heaven. I’m looking forward to tonight’s film, Oy Vey! My son is Gay! It’s great to see our local ABC Channel 10 as one of FilmOut’s major sponsors along with the California Institute for Contemporary Arts. A big bravo goes to FilmOut’s directors, advisory board and all their great volunteers. I can’t wait till FilmOut 2011!

The Big Easy: New Orleans comes to San Diego
Opened just a few months in the heart of Hillcrest, The Big Easy (127 University Ave.) is the home of the popular “Top Chef” contestant Frankie “The Bull” Terzoli who brings his original authentic New Orleans cuisine to breakfast, lunch and dinner menus (open 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.). Chef Terzoli’s file gumbo has been voted the best soup in all of San Diego twice in a row by Readers Magazine. When you walk into The Big Easy, it’s like walking into a typical New Orleans restaurant. It’s already become a popular place to eat and socialize, especially with the outgoing and lovable Chef “The Bull” Terzoli. Stop by and enjoy.
