Art Alive: The San Diego Museum of Art is hosting Art Alive at 9 a.m. Art Alive is a four-day event of art and flowers, creating an enchanting spring exhibition. The floral presentation is punctuated by a host of special events including, an opening celebration, member preview, cocktail social and various activities. The unique exhibition of floral arrangements is created by more than 100 floral designers who take inspiration from the Museum’s renowned collection. Equality Awards: Equality California’s Equality Awards will take place at the Culy Warehouse in Downtown at 6 p.m. Both Eric McCormack actor of “Will and Grace” and Assemblymember Mary Salas will be honored. Cino de Mayo celebration: Old Town will host Fiesta Old Town Cinco de Mayo from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Fiesta Old Town Cinco de Mayo is a free two-day fiesta and the largest Cinco de Mayo celebration north of the border. The fiesta has an incredible variety of festivities and entertainment for the whole family to enjoy. Stroll through the streets of Old Town and hear sizzling flamenco beats, Norteno flairs and traditional Mariachi music coming from the two stages of live entertainment. Explore the lively streets of the bustling Mercado where you can purchase an array of merchandise including, handmade leather pieces, beautiful jewelry and many more treasures that line San Diego Avenue. ‘The Taming of the Shrew’: The Intrepid Shakespeare Company will perform a new interpretation of William Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew at Theatre, Inc. at 2 p.m. The Taming of the Shrew is a comedy by William Shakespeare, believed to have been written between 1590 and 1594. It was published in 1623. The main plot depicts the courtship of Petruchio, a gentleman of Verona, and Katherina, the headstrong, obdurate shrew. Intrepid Shakespeare Company’s interpretation features two women over 60 protraying leads Katherine and Petruchio. Theatre, Inc. is located at 899 C St. in Downtown. Rainbow Comedy Show: Brew Ha-Ha will host its first annual GLBT comedy night at Twiggs Coffee House at 7 p.m. The event will feature Chris Clobber, Sarah Burford, Stephen Scott and Colin Osborn. Tommy Savitt is headlining. There is no cover, drink minimum or age requirement. The Brew Ha-ha shows are 90 minutes and never have more than 5 comics per show. The shows feature a variety of comics professional and semi professional. Brew Ha-Ha are very selective as to who they put on stage and pride themselves in finding the best comics for each show. Our House: The San Diego Gay Men’s Chorus will perform Spring Concert at the Birch North Park Theatre at 3 p.m. This exciting performance will honor organizations in San Diego that work to provide services and enrich the lives of members of our community.
The chorus will perform some of the greatest music ever written about what makes a house a home, including “C’mon a My House,” “Home” from The Wiz, Leonard Bernstein’s “Make Our Garden Grow, “Up the Ladder to the Roof” and numerous other audience favorites. House of Poland: House of Pacific Relations’ House of Poland will host its annual lawn program at 2 p.m. The annual lawn program will feature performance by the Polonez dancers of San Diego, the Polanie dancers of Yorba Linda and the musical group Polonia Trio. Delicious Polish food will also be sold including including, pierogi, stuffed cabbage, polish sausages and bigos (hunter’s stew) and a variety of pastries. The yearly lawn program is always held on the first Sunday in May. This day commemorates the Polish Constitution Day which is May 3rd, 1791. It was the first written constitution in Europe, and the second in the world, after the United States. ‘Bone’: UCSD Asian American literature professor Lisa Lowe will discuss Fae Myenne Ng’s novel Bone at the San Diego Public Library, East Village Branch at 6:30 p.m. In Bone, Fae Myenne Ng takes readers into the hidden heart of San Francisco’s Chinatown, to a world of family secrets, hidden shames and the lost bones of a “paper father.” It is a world in which two generations of the Leong family live in an uneasy tension as they try to fathom the source of the middle daughter Ona’s sorrow. Fae Myenne Ng’s portraits of the everyday heroism of the Leongs – who inflict deep hurt on each other in their struggles to survive, yet sustain one another with loyalty and love – have made Bone one of the most critically acclaimed novels of recent years and immediately a classic of contemporary American life. Guys, Games & Grub: The Center hosts Guys, Games & Grub at 6:30 p.m. Guys, Games & Grub is a fun, free, social activity for gay, bisexual and transgender men. The group meets in the auditorium of The Center to play a wide variety of board and card games. Beer, sodas and pizza are served. This event is for men 21 and up. A Journey for Peace: Local residents will talk about their trip to Palestine to help the people of Gaza at the First Unitarian Universalist Church at 7 p.m. Hany El-Saidany, Faith Attaguile and Larry Hampshire, residents of San Diego, went on a 200-vehicle, 500-person peace convoy to Palestine to ambulances, trucks and vans filled with medical aid and humanitarian supplies to the people of Gaza.
