From June 6 through June 12, AIDS/LifeCycle (ALC), the world’s largest annual HIV/AIDS fundraiser, will become a moving city of 3,000 riders, volunteers and staff members, who will work their way 545 miles from San Francisco to Los Angeles to raise awareness about the ongoing scourge of HIV and AIDS. Whether gay or straight, HIV-positive or HIV-negative, expert cyclists or novices, riders share a commitment to reducing new infections and the suffering caused by AIDS.
AIDS/LifeCycle (ALC) was created in 2001 to raise money for critical and life-saving HIV/AIDS services and prevention programs at San Francisco AIDS Foundation (SFAF) and the Los Angeles Gay & Lesbian Center (LAGLC). SFAF and the LAGLC were the first AIDS service organizations in the nation to produce in-house a multi-day fundraising event of this magnitude. In May 2002, the first event included 670 courageous riders supported by 250 volunteer “roadies” (support crew). The focus of the producers/ beneficiaries was not only to raise vital funds for their programs, but to create a highly visible educational event to inform the public that AIDS remains a worldwide crisis.
