Queer People of Color Conference: The fifth annual Queer People of Color Conference starts with its opening ceremonies at the San Diego LGBT Community Center on Friday, May 7, from 6-10 p.m. The opening ceremonies include a blessing, entertainment and speakers including The Center’s Latino Services Coordinator Carolina Ramos and San Diego City Commissioner Stampp Corbin. The conference continues at San Diego State University on Saturday, May 8, from 9 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. The second day of the conference includes workshops, entertainment, food and speakers including San Diego City Commissioner Nicole Murray-Ramirez, transgender youth advocate Isaac Nicholas Gomez, author Rigoberto Gonzales and spoken-word artist Skim. For more information, visit http://qpocc5.webs.com/agenda.htm or e-mail qpoccsd@gmail.com. ‘Moscow’: The Diversionary Theatre presents new musical play Moscow at 8 p.m. Moscow is about three men: Jon is a scholarly playwright who has lost many loved ones to AIDS and has retreated into cerebral celibacy, Luke, a sexually needy male hustler who lives solely for the next fleshly encounter and Matt is a shy virgin who struggles to balance the conflicting urges of love and lust. Trapped, uncertain if they are alive or dead, the men soon become emotionally embroiled. Admission is $33 with $4 off for students, seniors (60 and above) and military. Women’s Fest: The Women’s Resource Center will host its annual Women’s Fest at The Center from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Women’s Fest brings local women together for a day-long festival of workshops, entertainment and resources for lesbian, bisexual and transgender women. Enjoy workshops covering everything from breast health to sexuality to how to be a disk-jockey, a queer women of color panel and free lunch from Pizza Fusion. SDSU PrideFest: The San Diego State University (SDSU) Pride Action Committee and Cultural Arts & Special Events will host the second annual LGBT Pride Fest at Aztec Center from 7-10 p.m. The fest includes music, dancing, entertainment, drag performances, a community information fair and more. American Indian Cultural Days: Balboa Park will host American Indian Cultural Days from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. American Indian Cultural Days includes dancing, drumming, bird singing, powwow activities, storytelling and more. More than 40 juried artisan booths will offer wares. American Indian food will also be for sale. Admission is free. Mother’s Day concerts: Civic organist Carol Williams will perform a special recital at 2 p.m. and the Aztec Choir will perform selections spanning a variety of musical genres at 5 p.m., both at the Spreckels Organ Pavillion. Group run and walk: Front Runners & Walkers San Diego is meeting for running and walking at the southeast corner of Sixth Avenue and Laurel Street under the “big tree” in Balboa Park at 6 p.m. Front Runners & Walkers San Diego is a running and walking club for lesbians, gay men, their families and friends. The group provides a number of walking, running and fitness activities, as well as occasional social events. Runs take between three to six miles and walks take two to three miles. Cardio Hip Hop: The Culture Shock Dance Center will host a free Cardio Hip Hop at 5:30 p.m. Cardio Hip Hop is a high energy, fitness based class set to hip hop music and choreography. The class was designed to offer an alternative for those who are looking for a great cardio workout but also want authentic hip hop choreography and music. Dancers and fitness enthusiasts work up a sweat in the hour-long class and come away with cutting edge hip hop moves they can show off in the clubs. ‘All in the Timing’: ion theatre company will host All in the Timing at ion theatre 8 p.m. Get ready for a side-splitting, non-stop, laugh-out-loud night of comedy from outright hilarious, to downright silly, to absolutely hysterical. David Ives’ All in the Timing swerves into action with wondrous wordplay and literary linguistic gymnastics, making a welcome, encore return to ion. North Park Farmers Market: The North Park Farmers Market will open at 3 p.m. and go till sunset. Visitors can browse from a wide selection of fruits, vegetables, nuts, flowers and other items. The farmers market is a great place to stock up on low priced, fresh items for the upcoming week. Also, a number of promotional booths are available to provide information about local businesses and services. Musicians are usually on hand to entertain shoppers.
