‘Nina’: The Sunset Temple Theatre will perform Nina at 8 p.m. Eunice Kathleen Waymon (1933–2003), better known by her stage name Nina Simone, was an American singer, songwriter, pianist, arranger and civil rights activist. As a child, Simone dreamed of becoming the world’s first black classical pianist. Events, like the KKK bombing of an Alabama church and the murder of African-American leaders, politicized her – she would be “nonviolent no more” – and her music (including the explosive “Mississippi Goddamn,” which was banned throughout the South). Calvin Manson creates a show with four women representing Simone. The play includes favorites: “I Loves You, Porgy,” “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood” and the anthem of the Movement, “To Be Young, Gifted, and Black.” The Sunset Temple Theatre is located at 3911 Kansas St. in North Park.
